To my friend, Kayla, and her daughter, Natalie
Sixteen years ago, on April 12, six people from around the country were born with a hidden special ability.
On their sixteenth birthday, they each develop their special ability for the first time. Whether they can soar through the clouds, run faster than the speed of light, or tear through a brick wall, all the teenagers must choose how to use their powers. Will they keep their abilities secret? Will they use them only to benefit themselves? Or will they attempt to help others—even if the risks are greater than they could imagine? One way or another, each teen will have to learn what it means to be . . . superhuman.

The morning of Natalie Santos’s sixteenth birthday felt a whole lot like the morning before, when she was still fifteen. She had to admit, she had been hoping that turning sixteen would give her some sort of special insight into her life. Instead she just wished she could have gotten another three hours of sleep. Same as all the other mornings.
Natalie sighed and sat on the side of her bed, unwrapping a protein bar from the box in her nightstand. Rain pattered against the windows. April 12 looked more like February 12. Isn’t it supposed to be spring by now? she thought.
She stared at the calendar on her wall, munching on the bar of chocolatey sawdust. There were green x’s on the days she did an extra workout, and she wasn’t about to let herself slack off just because it was her birthday. She avoided looking at the calendar, with the red circle drawn around the following Saturday. The next track meet.
Just focus on making each practice count, she reminded herself as anxiety prickled in her stomach. One day at a time. She pulled her wavy, dark hair back into a ponytail. The sooner she got out of the house, the less time she would have to second-guess her motivation, and the less time she would have to convince herself to stay in bed and get an extra hour of sleep.
She quickly changed into her running clothes, laced up her new running shoes—an early birthday present from her sister, Maia—and headed out for her morning run. Mornings before school were the only time that Natalie could fit in these occasional extra runs, and her sister and grandparents would still be asleep. Their parents had died in a car accident seven years ago, and the girls had lived with their grandparents ever since.
She set off down the quiet street, jogging to warm up. The rain was cold but not as heavy as it had looked from under her blankets.
Her new running shoes were still a little stiff, but they cushioned her feet and gave an extra spring to her stride compared to her old worn-down shoes. She focused on
