Author

Pamela Martin

Pamela Martin, youngest child of six, was born in Lincolnshire just after the Second World War, a time when there was no inside plumbing or central heating, when there were few cars and children played safely in the streets; a time when entertainment was getting together with the community in which she lived, safety and love came from neighbours who shared their last pot of tea with neighbours. Pamela has had three lifetimes of exciting experiences. She has been living and working for seventeen years in Montreal, Canada, and twelve years in Florida, before retiring back in Lincolnshire to write, paint and breed ragdoll cats. Her two sons were her motivation to explore the world and show them just how life must be embraced with both hands. The different cultures and life experiences have been the rich colour palette from which to weave the wonderful patchwork of her characters' personalities. Some of these personalities and stories are passed down from her family, thankfully in an era before conversation was a lost art.

    Flying High - Pamela Martin

    FLYING HIGH

W hat were we thinking when we agreed to this? Fay Lynn grumbled. "Decorations for 15 tables and food for 100 people? We must have been crazy!"

Shush, sister, Gayla said. You know we've gotten most of the food done and in the freezer. We'll have just a few things to manage on the day of the dance, but they'll be a snap. Stop your fussing!

But the decorations! her sister wailed. What are we going to do for the decorations?

The sisters were seated at a table in coffee shop section of their bookstore, sipping Christmas coffees and trying to plan for the town's first annual Christmas hangar dance. Someone on the town's event planning committee decided it would be romantic to recreate a World War II dance at the old airstrip. The sisters and their best friend, Evangeline, volunteered to plan decorations for the four-person tables that would ring the dance floor.

Well, it's only the tables, Evangeline contributed. We don't have to come up with anything for the rest of the hangar. Once we design a single centerpiece, we just have to duplicate it 14 times. It's not like we have to come up with 15 different ideas.

Reluctantly, Fay Lynn agreed. So, where should we start? Do we need a theme? Are we going to use flowers? Real ones or silk? What about...

Chill, Fay Lynn, Gayla interrupted. You're going to work yourself into a heart attack and miss the whole dance. One question at a time!

Evangeline jumped in. I think the fact that we're having the dance in the old hangar sort of sets our theme for us. I think we should do something related to the pilots during the war. I do think we should have some flowers, and, if we use silk ones, maybe we could take the arrangements to the veterans home after the dance.

The three friends thought about the suggestion for a second, then they all nodded in agreement. They'd made their first decision.

Evangeline continued, "When I was stashing Christmas decorations up in the attic last year, I saw some old boxes that looked like they might have had some of Uncle Frank's old military stuff in them. Why don't we head to my house and see what we can find up there. Even if we don't find enough
