In the top tower of Spiral Palace, Ernest, a wizard-lizard wearing a purple pointy hat and a matching cape, put three apricots on a chair. Above him, two tomatoes, each with bright yellow wings, swooped down from a bookshelf. Near the window, three silver-winged bananas hovered. A flock of plums fluttered their gold wings around a chandelier.

Ernest cleared his throat and raised his wand. But as he opened his mouth to begin casting a spell, he heard a knock on the door. Come in! he called out.

The door opened, and in stepped Princess Bloom, a mint-green unicorn with a magic emerald that hung around her neck on a purple ribbon. In her mouth, she carried a blue velvet bag. Bloom smiled as she admired Ernest’s flying tomatoes, bananas, and plums. Then she dropped the bag between her shiny green hooves and said, You sure have been working hard on your flying spells. It looks like you’ve finally gotten the hang of it.

Ernest blushed. I’ve been practicing for weeks, he said. At the beginning, all the fruits and vegetables grew springs instead of wings. There were oranges and peaches bouncing and boinging all over the room. But now they sprout wings, usually on my first or second try.

Just then, a swooping tomato collided with a plum right above Ernest’s head. With a splat, the tomato landed on the pointed tip of Ernest’s hat. Not again, he groaned as red juice dripped into his eyes.

Bloom giggled.

Anyway, Ernest said, wiping his face with his cape, what brings you to my tower?

I was wondering, Bloom said, if you might use your magic to help me.

Ernest grinned with delight. The unicorn princesses often teased him about his spells, which usually seemed to go wrong. It was unusual for a creature in the Rainbow Realm to ask for his magical assistance. I’d be most honored, he said, dabbing a final drop of tomato juice from his long, green nose.

Bloom opened the velvet bag and pulled out a stack of lime-colored, glittery envelopes. These are invitations to my birthday party this afternoon, she explained. I’m about to take them to the mail-snails to deliver. But there’s one invitation I wanted to send in a special way. Bloom passed an especially glittery envelope to Ernest. On the front, it said,

To My Sister and Best Friend, Princess Prism

As you know, Bloom continued, Prism likes anything that’s playful and creative. And she loves surprises. I was wondering if you could cast a spell on the invitation so it grows wings and flies to her.

Absolutely! Ernest exclaimed, jumping up and down. "And I know exactly which spell to use. It’s in my favorite book, Wings on Things, volume three. Or is it volume two?" Ernest scratched
