I started judo at the age of five, so it is true to say I cannot remember a time when the sport was not a part of my life. As part of a judo family I was able to practice at home with my brother David and sisters Charlotte and Vicky and whilst growing up I was never short of training partners!
My father and co-author of this book, Howard, has been my personal coach since my career began and has travelled across the world with me attending competitions and training camps. In that time, I have represented Great Britain at Olympic, World, and European Championships and in 2014 won the Commonwealth Games gold medal for England.
I have been crowned British Champion on eight occasions as a youth and senior player and my father collected four British Veterans Championships in the 90s. In addition, I have won European and Grand Slam medals on the International Circuit.
This book sets out to introduce the newer player to the sport in a gentle form by demonstrating that judo can be practiced without the need for continuous heavy impacts. Learning techniques in clusters, in a drill-like regime, is a somewhat unique but tried-and-tested formula which enables players of all ages to remember a variety of techniques.
Although I choose to fight around the world, this book will show how judo is very much a family sport. The various demonstrations in the photographs are performed by my sisters and longstanding training partner, David. Even my young nephew, Reece, assisted by performing breakfalls. If ever a sport can be shared by a family it is the sport of Judo.
Finally a thank you to my mother Denise who has organised and arranged many a judo trip overseas and in Britain, and endured many an early start to travel to far off places so we could fight all over the world.

The word Judo translates into the gentle art
. Anyone who has ever engaged in a Judo contest would almost certainly disagree with this view! Whilst it is true that there are no punches or kicks, and there is no intention to display a violent demeanour, truly gentle is something of an understatement. The strength and commitment to fitness involved in contest Judo is phenomenal.
Judo emanates from Japan where Jigoro Kano, in simple terms, during the 19th century removed the dangerous bits from jiu jitsu and in effect created a martial art that was safe to perform in a competitive manner. Since then, it has evolved into an Olympic sport.
There have been countless manuals that have covered the complete history of Judo development. We are not seeking to cover
