work.
Preface
The book "Zika virus disease: from origin to outbreak is another exciting contemporary work after our previous book
Ebola virus disease: from origin to outbreak which was very well received. However, the Zika virus infection outbreak was completely different from the previous Ebola virus disease outbreak. Zika virus disease is a mild disease with most infected patients experiencing no or nonspecific symptoms with complete recovery. Dying from the disease is almost unheard of. And yet, World Health Organization declared Zika virus disease a
Public Health Emergency of International Concern." As the readers will learn through well chronicled progression of events over half a century in our book, the mild self-limiting nature of Zika virus infection made it difficult to identify the disease among population and harder to justify allocating resources to control the global spread. The world started expressing prominent concerns when Zika viral infection during pregnancy was linked to neurological abnormalities occurring in fetuses. Our book will lead the readers through comparisons with previous and related viral infections so the unique aspects of this outbreak are highlighted. The new face of a viral outbreak is not going to be characterized by isolation camps populated by dying patients and medical professionals with daunting protective gear. The invisible face of the outbreak will be concerned potential parents living through the threat of having a new born with serious lifelong disability with no means to prevent this occurrence (unlike other infections in pregnancy). Our book will provide an up to date description on Zika viral infections, pathophysiology, and therapeutics. The readers will appreciate the social, financial, and psychological aspects of such a disease through well-articulated data presented in our book. The reader may be left to wonder how many other viruses are out there that we have ignored as insignificant and thus allowed them to progress to a full blown outbreak like Zika virus
