Many Years Ago
"What’s happening! Oh my God! Winston! Elia squealed in panic as fear gripped every fiber of her being. The atmosphere was in total disarray. Screams and cries were heard throughout the plane. It housed three hundred people. After numerous PA announcements, the pilots fell silent.
They’re doing everything in their power to gain control of the aircraft. Please...stay in your seats. Repeat! Stay in your seats! The Dominican flight attendant yelled hysterically, gripping a handle which was no match for the force placed upon her. Like a bat out of hell, hat flying off her head, barefoot, another female attendant scurried down the aisle in search of an empty seat.
Woman shut the hell up! We’re going down! An obese early seventies Black man angrily shouted.
Mommy we’re gonna die! We’re gonna die! A little boy squealed three seats behind.
No baby! We’re okay hold on sweetheart! The mother called out in a frenzied state, squeezing him with both arms using herself as a human shield, burying his head in her large bosom.
Grab for your life people! Hold on! Brace! Brace! Winston howled frantically buckling his seat belt. His food tray flew into the air. It sliced Elia’s beautiful brown face.
Ahhh! Oh my God! She cried in agony reaching for Winston’s arm in exchange for imaginary comfort. A sixties Caucasian woman dressed like a nun went into heavy prayer out loud. Some passengers joined in, eyes closed, heads bowed.
Father God we ask you in this time of need, it is your will father the almighty eternal God. You are the everlasting health of those who believe in you. Hear us for your troubled and sick servant, for whom we implore the aid of your tender mercy that being restored to bodily health...." Suddenly in an instant, there was a blinding flash. The deafening sound of a horrendous explosion created a tomb of mayhem. Boooooom!! Metal, luggage, food, blood, glass, body parts became an inferno’s meal. Their worst nightmare had come true landing in a thick dense forest that occupied six million square kilometers. A jungle canopy of the Amazonian Basin in South Africa.
Minutes Later
Elia woke on her back looking at the sky. It was heavily clouded. She couldn’t believe she’d made it. After taking an inventory of her face, limbs, the fact she was breathing, she burst into tears. Moments later she slowly rose to her feet. Shock waves of pain ran through her body, covered in lacerations and bruises. What she was about to witness was too incredible for words. She scanned the area horrified by the devastation of the wreckage. Dead bodies, plane parts, wires, luggage were scattered everywhere. The sheer violence of the crash threw bodies two hundred feet from the plane. By pure chance a faint voice was heard in the distance. Elia!
Someone called her. She turned around feverishly. As horrible the circumstances, she was happy to have someone to go through the ordeal with. Winston.
She uttered with staggered elation, watching a broken melanated bloodied injured man approach. She was in awe that he was so close and still alive. They mustered strength, ran toward each other, hugging tighter than ever before. I’m so glad you’re alive. What are we going to do? How are we going to survive? People are dead. I can’t make it out here.
She spoke through tears, too fast to be understood. Shhh, calm down. We’re in this together. I know, calm down.
He gave a tight hug, stroked her hair. His eyes combed the area. The danger was far from over and he knew it. Survivors pitched in to help strangers who were worse. Leaking fuel soaked the wreckage. The plane was split in half. Others were trapped inside, unable to move. Some pinned under deceased passengers. Radio! I hear it! We have to make contact!
A young early twenties white man hollered with his arm extended, pointing to the mangled plane. He had extensive burns, forehead bleeding. Without hesitation Winston broke free from Elia’s embrace, ran in the young man’s direction. "No! Are you crazy! It’s going to blow! She shouted.
We don’t have a choice! We’re in the middle of nowhere! Winston replied with force, adrenaline flooding through him.
I’m sorry ma’am but everyone’s very injured. It’ll be dark soon. Animals are attracted to the smell of blood. We won’t have a fighting chance. The young man said. Elia was speechless. She stood shaking in torn clothes with her eyes wide, mouth dropped. He was right. They had to act quickly. Nightfall was dreadfully approaching. With it, comes the cold. Hypothermia and voluminous injury was a sure way to bring death closer.
I’ll come with you! Another guy chimed in, pale bad skin, around forty years of age, albeit, clear he’d originated from a well-to-do life. The men made their way to the plane, instantly recognizing people in serious trouble. They heard the plane’s radio, a lifeline, the only means to the outside world. It was a massive gamble.
How the hell are we supposed to get to it! There’s debris everywhere! The young twenties yelled.
Please, i need your help. Get me out, please. A late forties Puerto Rican woman begged. Chairs, blood, luggage blanketed her body.
Ma’am we have to radio for help. It’s better if you rest. You’re hurt really bad. Winston said, lightly stepping inside the plane operating from a one track mind.
No! Let's move her first! If it were your mother you’d want us to help her! The young man yelled.
Kid you really need to think before you speak! We're deep in the jungle! Don’t have time! We'll get to her later alright! The well- to-do guy shouted.
Piss on your grave man! The young man replied, sticking up his middle finger.
Both of you close your mouths! Save your energy! We have a long night ahead of us! Winston interjected venomously, walking on objects to the front of the plane.
Ma’am, it’s going to be okay. I’ll help you." Elia said nicely, calculating each step toward the woman.
Two Hours Later
Time ticked by. Everyone who’d survived was literally at death’s doorstep. They fought for their lives, hung on by threads. Their only hope of survival was to maintain sanity, attend to wounds best as possible. Conditions were deteriorating. Depression was setting in. To add insult to injury a torrential downpour soaked them with no way of drying. We have to find a place for the night. This isn’t working.
Winston considered, shivering huddled under a tree with Elia. The late forties woman and several others passed away inside the plane. Scattered outside, many were clinging to life unable to move due to severed ligaments, crushed bones, internal bleeding. Temperatures were dropping fast. The other two men walked away rummaging for supplies. I never should’ve listened to you. I didn’t want to come. Like always you don’t respect my feelings.
Elia pointed out, teeth chattering, trembling like a leaf. You’re crying over spilled milk. This is hardly the time to chastise.
Winston answered. I don’t care. If we ever get out of here, for Lena’s sake, you need to hear about the error of your ways.
So i planned this? Is that what you’re trying to say? Unbelievable.
No Winston but look where trusting you has landed me...literally. If it’s not one thing it’s another.
You never pass a chance to argue. I’m out here trying to save lives not to mention i’m injured too.
"There was no way that
