    André Gide (1869-1951) was a French writer from a middle-class, Protestant family. He is considered one of the most influential writers of the 20th century, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1947. His work often addresses homosexuality from an accepting perspective, reflecting the author’s own self-acceptance as a gay man and his stated desire to free himself from the social and religious constraints surrounding the issue.

    Gide made his literary debut in 1890 with the publication of The Notebooks of André Walter, although his most significant literary works were those he wrote in the 1920s. His literary career went from strength to strength, and his writing was highly political: he condemned colonialism and Soviet totalitarianism, as well as opposing fascism.
