    J. R. R. Tolkien was an English writer and university professor. Although he is best-known for his The Lord of the Rings trilogy, he was in fact the creator of an entire fictional universe, which he used as the setting for poems (The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, 1962), fairy tales and legends (Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth, 1980). Fuelled by a tremendous love of language, literature and mythology, Tolkien’s imagination spawned an entire universe populated with fantastic creatures, many of which are now considered staple archetypes of fantasy fiction. This universe served as the setting for such meticulously detailed stories that Tolkien is often credited with both founding and giving credibility to the genre of modern fantasy.
