    Beast - J.S. Veter

A letter to parents, caregivers and teachers:

My youngest son was diagnosed with dyslexia when he was 7. It was frightening at first, but we got a lot of support from his school and from a couple of fantastic Optometrists.

As his classmates progressed to chapter books, my son grew increasingly frustrated with the primary books available to him because of his reading level. He felt self-conscious reading ‘baby books’ and found the stories boring.

No wonder. Dyslexics aren’t stupid. They don’t need easy stories. They need an easier read.

Where were the high-interest, low-vocabulary books for kids like my son?

They’re few and far between, let me tell you. It didn’t take long before he’d exhausted the local library. We looked online but what was available didn’t appeal to him. How could I help him?

Then I thought, "You’re a writer, for goodness sake."

    And I got to work.
