Chapter One

I cannot go back. The life I led before has absolutely no appeal for me. I faked my death, and I hope to escape from my previous masters. Their reach is large and powerful, but they are not all-knowing. I will move on.

I have come to one of the mountain bases to apply for a spot on one of the patrols. These bases protect the world below from the terrible creatures that live up in the mountains. I might be able to escape the notice of my masters here. I have the fighting skills necessary to survive and maybe succeed up here. It is fitting, considering what I used to do. I knock on the door.

The door swings open and a spear is leveled at me. State your name and intention! barks the
