Chapter 1
Norman tiptoed down the hallway, arms out for balance, his face set in determination. He had memorized where each step would cause a creaking sound and avoided these with practiced precision. It was near pitch-black in the hallway, but Norman couldn’t risk turning on the hallway lights. His parents’ room was just a few doors down and he had learned the hard way that they were very light sleepers.
His father was stern enough during daylight hours, but when awoken from sleep, he turned downright scary, capable of all sorts of angry yelling. Punishment was always quick to follow. One such unpleasant night had seen Norman grounded for three weeks straight, every toy and semblance of anything fun stripped from his room. The house was very large, a mansion of sorts, and full of places to explore. Norman’s curiosity was just too strong to resist. Regardless of how many times he had been punished or scolded, he found it to be worth the risk. Having moved in just a few months ago, Norman had quickly discovered that there were rooms that were filled with antiques, rooms that were filled with paintings, even rooms with
