Motorcycle Men - Mary Nelson
Chapter One
Three months later, she still had nightmares. They were always eerily vivid—the scowl on the biker's face, the glint of headlights on the silver barrel of the gun, the look of shock on her father's face as he'd gone down. She could practically smell the exhaust as the bikers peeled away. But the most haunting part was that split second when they had made eye contact with her as they drove off.
She knew they would come after her—they had to.
She wasn't stupid enough to turn them in, but that didn't matter to them. She was the sole witness to Judge Matthews' death, capable of putting the two of them behind bars. She even knew their names; they'd been there at the trial when her father had sentenced Kristoff Petrovsky, the gang's ringleader, to a lifetime in jail for a half-dozen counts of murder and other charges. It had been a landmark ruling; no one had expected the police to amass so much evidence against the man and other key members of the gang, and there was a lot of talk about how the streets would be so much safer now.
Unfortunately, it wasn't safe to be Judge Matthews anymore. But the proud judge had refused to give up his noble profession and go into hiding, as would have been wise. They'd given him a couple extra guards for a few months following the trial, but he'd eventually gotten sick of having the men shadowing him constantly and said there were better ways those resources could be used.
Of course, that was when the remaining gang members had struck.
Anna sighed and rubbed wearily at her eyes. She checked the time on her phone and was relieved to see it was nearly time for her to get ready for work anyway; she hadn't lost too much sleep. But she didn't feel rested at all.
She slowly pulled herself out of bed and went about her morning routine: showering, dressing, eating breakfast. Then, she drove over to the diner to open it up for the day.
It was a slow morning—not too surprising since it was a Tuesday in October and there weren't very many tourists traveling through the small towns of California at this time of year. It would pick up at lunch when many of the workers from around town tended to spill in for sandwiches and coffee, but for now... Well, Anna had a bit too much time to dwell on her thoughts.
Hey, now—what's that poor napkin ever done to you?
a man asked her.
Anna jumped, jarred from her thoughts, and realized she was violently wringing a napkin in her hands. She smiled sheepishly at the newcomer and gestured around the nearly empty diner. Have a seat wherever you'd like.
The man was strikingly handsome, with tan, chiseled features and dark eyes. His dark hair was pulled back in a knot. He wore jeans and a t-shirt, but they hugged his trim figure closely and left very little to the imagination. He sidled up to Anna, offering her a charming smile and holding out a hand. I don't think we've met yet,
he said. I'm Damien.
Anna shook his head, feeling a bit dazed by his good looks. Anna,
she said. Are you from around here?
I grew up here,
Damien said. "I've been living back East for a few years, but I'm
