Chapter 1

Mom, I’m going for a jog. Hayden called to her mom as she sat down and pulled on her running shoes. Hayden walked and jogged the woods quite often since it was the back yard to her home.

Be safe Hayden her mom called back don’t forget to take your emergency pack! She demanded.

Yeah mom already got it! Hayden yelled back irritated.

Hayden had been walking the woods since she could first stand on her own and now… that she was seventeen her mother made her carry an emergency pack. Once she had stopped to rest and pulled out the water she carried and got curious. It was only a few days after her mom had forced her to start carrying the pack and she couldn’t contain her curiosity any longer.

Coming to a rest at her favorite spot that day Hayden sat down on her favorite rock and pulled her pack into her lap to examine it. Strangely enough it held snacks, a knife, extra water, a first aid kit, and a few syringe epee-pens. The strangest part was that the bag also carried a blanket, a solar blanket, and a few other things which didn’t seem quite necessary.

For the millionth time, Hayden had left the house and jogged off toward the trees. The day was quite warm and she probably would be resting quite often; drinking a lot of water. The wind whipped through her long brown hair and she vowed she would pin it back when she stopped. Shoving in her headphones into her ears Hayden took up her normal pace.

Leaves were blowing all around along with dandelion seeds and small cotton puffs. Hayden noticed a family of rabbits scurry from their lunch place to a hiding spot as she passed and smiled. Hayden had always loved nature. She couldn’t help it, that’s what happens when her father was a wildlife veterinarian and her mom was a florist. There was always sick and healing animals brought home to care for and flowers spread around the house.

Hayden slowed her pace when she came to the favorite resting spot, like always; a large rock overlooking a sparkling crystal blue lake. She stopped just shy of the rock and plopped the emergency pack down onto it. I think I will take a dip Hayden said to herself as she shut off her music and pulled the ear plugs from her ears. Placing it safely into the pack she began to grab for anything else.

Hayden was thrilled that earlier she had placed a towel and swim suit inside just in case she got hot on the run. She dug into the pack and pulled out her bathing suit placing it onto the smooth surface of the rock. Then she pulled her towel from the bag.

Hayden tugged her tank top up and over her head then pulled off her bra and hung the bikini top from around her neck twisting it to tie it snugly in place. Nobody came out here these woods were private property and state land mostly. The lines were blurred in some areas but it was always a safe bet that nobody would ever be here.

Just to make sure Hayden looked around before dropping her shorts and underwear.
