CHAPTER I
Norse Mythology
Norse Mythology - also called Scandinavian mythology - is a type of religion that was practiced by the people of Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Sweden and Norway) and people from the Northern parts of Germany. The myths and legends give a clear picture of a universe which involved the battles that had transpired between the Gods and the Giants in a cosmic conflict destined to end in the annihilation of the world. Several gods are mentioned in Norse Mythology such as: Thor: a fierce and valiant god who relentlessly pursues his foes and crushes them; Odin: god of battle, wisdom and poetry; Njoror: a provider of wealth and land, and many more. Rest assured the different deities will be elaborately dilated on in the following chapters.
Norse Mythology stems from the myths and legends of northern peoples who spoke a form of the Germanic language. Its many features resemble that of the pre-Christian Germanic groups’ mythology. The myths carried over with some of the groups who migrated to England and Scandinavia. As they converted to Christianity, their traditional beliefs began to recede. In Scandinavia though, Christianity did not pervade until a later date, and Germanic mythology – of the Norse version— had an iron grip throughout the Viking era, from about A.D. 750 to 1050.
The world of Norse mythology consists of two groups of gods: the Ǣsirand the Vanir, as well as giants, elves, dwarfs, trolls, and heroic human warriors.
