About this ebook

Dimitri Naumovski wanted to pull the trigger and end his life as Russia's top assassin but the phone rang. Another mission was about to begin. Russia needed him again. How many times has he answered the phone? How many graves has he filled for mother Russia? Too many to count. Too many to remember. And that is exactly what his father Alexander who is now the head of the FSB and his boss wanted when he was raising Dimitri. He wanted a machine that did as it was told. Obeyed orders without question and kill the enemies of Russia without blinking. Dimitri put away the Vektor, a souvenir given to him by Mikhail Gorbachev himself in gratitutde for saving his life from assassins long ago when Russia was known as the Soviet Empire and Mikail was President. It was time to fill another grave.

This time a Chechen terrorist has stolen a cylinder of Sarin nerve gas and is planning to use it on innocent Russian citizens. This cannot be allowed. It is Dimitri's responsibility to protect Russia from its enemies. It is Dimitri's duty to find and eliminate any threat to his country. Eliminating the Chechen terrorist only leaves Dimitri with more questions. How did they get into a secure facility in the heart of Russia where the nerve agent was kept under guard and heavily protected in the first place? The only way would be if someone high up in the Russian government gave them access. But who? And for what purpose?

This is the beginning of a journey that will take Dimitri on a mission that will determine the fate of America and the future of freedom in Russia. As he put's together the pieces of the puzzle and the closer he get's to the truth he is reunited with enemies of the past. Enemies that want nothing more then the Execution to die.

    Bruce Savage – Russian Games

    Quotes

I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

-Winston Churchill radio speech, Oct. 1, 1939

Nobody and nothing will stop Russia on the road to strengthening democracy and ensuring human rights and freedoms.

    -Vladimir Putin

Russia is an ancient country with historical, profound traditions and a very powerful moral foundation. And this foundation is a love for the Motherland and patriotism. Patriotism in the best sense of that word. Incidentally, I think that to a certain extent, to a significant extent, this is also attributable to the American people.

    - Vladimir Putin

"Whoever doesn't miss the Soviet Union has no heart. Whoever wants it back has no brain."

    - Vladimir Putin

Russia has made its choice in favor of democracy. Fourteen years ago, independently, without any pressure from outside, it made that decision in the interests of itself and interests of its people... of its citizens. This is our final choice, and we have no way back. There can be no return to what we used to have before.

    - Vladimir Putin

    Prologue

The Once self-proclaimed powerful and mighty Evil Empire was dying. After years of mismanagement and overspending on grand military ambitions, blatantly ignoring economic growth and a failed war in Afghanistan the financial coffers of the second most powerful nation in the world had run dry. The Soviet Union was broke! Its final death throws came with the dissolution of the Soviet Socialist Republic in December of 1991. Democracy had finally come to Russia at long last! An ambitious and democratically elected President, Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin took the oath of office not long after the dissolution with an overwhelming fifty-seven percent of the peoples vote. A new day had come to the people of Russia. The people now had a real chance at fulfilling the hopes and dreams that they had kept secret and hidden from the once powerful and notorious Communist regime.

Mikhail Gorbachev was out. The last Communist ruler of the Soviet Empire had been ousted despite his futile attempts at reform. Out with the old and in with the new. The Russian Federation was born! Yeltsin immediately dissolved the power of the Communist party and set out to rebuild the once powerful nation that was now in chaos. Grocery stores were empty, millions were homeless and starving. Crime and unrest was the attitude of the day. There was much to do-much to do indeed.

While Russian democracy lay in its cradle who would think that despite the wishes of its people, another group-secret and hidden- would be plotting its demise? A group known as, The Committee. Who would think that this secret group of Communist had ambitions to kill the newborn democracy as it lay sleeping in its cradle? Who knew that this secret group hiding in the darkness that its party had been banished to would be hiding an ace up its sleeve? Not just any ace, but a nuclear ace that had been tucked away long ago for a rainy day. It is said, and with good reason; you should never trust a dying animal. You never know what it might do...

    Part I My Empire

    Chapter 1

    November 7, 1962

    The Soviet Cargo Ship Grisha.

Somewhere in the North Atlantic Ocean.

The World Exhaled! The United States and the Soviet Union had just finished a nuclear Mexican standoff that could have plunged both countries into a massive nuclear exchange. Soviet R-12 Intermediate-range nuclear missiles had been discovered on the island nation of Cuba and for the past several days both America and the Soviet Union stood eye-to-eye and toe to toe unwilling to back down. The missiles could not be allowed in Cuba so close to America. Soviet R-12’s are more than capable of striking any heavily populated American city and this could not be allowed. This would not be allowed. An agreement had been reached through back channels in the final seconds between America and the Soviets in order to save face on both sides. Neither wanted a nuclear war. Neither country wanted to destroy the world. But neither could show weakness in the eyes of the world.

America would deactivate its Thor and Jupiter IRBM’s in Europe and promises never to invade Cuba. In exchange all of the Soviet missiles and bombers would be packed up and shipped back to the Soviet Union. And so it was. All of the Soviet missiles and bombers were packed up and put onto cargo ships and sent back to the Soviet Union, just as the Soviets had agreed to do. All of the ships were verified to have reached their destination with their deadly cargo. But then...records can be falsified...

War-Peace-War- Peace! You would think that such powerful men would know which direction they wish to go in. You would think that a seasoned politician such as Premier Cruschev would not be so quickly persuaded by such a young American President such as Kennedy. But yet, here we are Yuri headed back to the Soviet Union. Bring the missiles to Cuba. Take the missiles home. I hope that this is the final word on the matter. Are we going to die today? Perhaps tomorrow? Whose decision is it supposed to be anyway? Do we have a say in the matter at all? We are like pawns on a chessboard where nobody dares to checkmate! Captain Arkadi Vasilevich said to his first officer as he stood with his arms crossed staring out the window on the bridge of the Soviet cargo ship Grisha Podobedov at the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean. He took off his Captains hat and tossed it onto a navigation console in front of him as he ran his hand through his thick black hair.

BAAHH! Enough trying to know what they are thinking. Who am I to know what is on the minds of such men. I am but an insignificant Captain...an ant. They give an order and I obey. That is all I need to know.

You are right, Sir. You should not worry yourself with what is on the minds of men with more power then we shall ever know. You are headed home. Soon you will be with your wife and new baby. That is what matters I think, Sir. Yuri Sidorov the Captains First Officer replied as he leaned over navigational charts plotting the course the Grisha would take on its final length of its journey back to port at Leningrad in the Soviet Union.

Ahh Yes! My wife and child. Soon we will be together again. My wife Lika will be waiting for me at the dock. And with her she shall have our first child Dimitri. He was born just before we received orders to go to Cuba you know Yuri. I have had only enough time to hold my son only once at the hospital before we left. He shall be a great man one day. Mark my words Yuri. Dimitri shall be a legend in the history of Russia. I may not be remembered, but I promise you, his name will be remembered with pride. He will be a great and powerful man in Russia one day.

Sir-if your son grows up to be half the man you are- he shall be a great man indeed.

Thank you Yuri. That is very kind of you to say. You should come over, have dinner with us. My wife would like this. She will cook so much food you won't be able to leave the table. She is a very good cook you know. Captain Vasilevich said as he rubbed his slightly rounded stomach and found his way back to the helm.

It would be an honor Sir. I shall bring the wine and we will toast to your new son.

What have we here Yuri? Captain Vasilevich said pointing out at the distant sky where dark storm clouds were starting to form.

I think we're headed for a little nasty weather- Sir.

I can see this. Have the crew make sure everything is secure and go to the radar room and get me the latest weather information Yuri. With the cargo we are carrying we cannot afford to waltz our way into rough seas.

    Yes sir, right away.

Yuri, also check on the situation with the American planes that have been following us. If they have turned away, then I would suspect that we are indeed headed for some very nasty weather. And make sure our KGB friend is updated. We don't need him breathing down our necks in the middle of a storm.

Yes Sir. I’ll find Comrade Naumovski and make sure he’s updated. Yuri briskly replied as he left the bridge and headed to the radar room. Finding Comrade Alexander Naumovski shouldn’t be a problem for the young First Officer. Especially when Comrade Naumovski will be looking for him.

    Chapter 2

A strange feeling came over First Officer Yuri Sidorov as he entered the radar room of the cargo ship. A feeling that someone was there hiding someplace. The radar operator was not at his post monitoring the radar equipment as he should be. Something was not right. This strange feeling that something wasn’t right reached its climax as a tall slender man with short black well-groomed hair wearing a dark drab suit stepped out from the shadows of the dimly lit radar room and pointed a pistol equipped with a silencer at the young First Officer. It was Comrade Alexander Naumovski the KGB officer assigned to the Grisha.

What is the meaning of this Comrade Naumovski? Why are you pointing your weapon at me? Yuri asked as fear and confusion replaced the strange feeling the First Officer was having.

Meaning Comrade Sidorov? It is obvious don’t you think? Alexander replied as an evil grin slid across his face and then he squeezed the trigger and fired two shots at Yuri’s chest. The young First Officer placed his hand on his chest and looked at Alexander with shock as he stumbled backwards into the doorway of the radar room and then collapsed to the floor-dead!

Alexander quickly went over to Yuri’s body and grabbed his feet and dragged him behind the radar equipment where he had placed the body of the radar operator not more than moments before the unsuspecting First Officer had entered the room. It is now time to continue on with his mission of eliminating the rest of the crew. A mission that was given to him before he left the Soviet Union by a group of very powerful people. The Grisha must not return home to the Soviet Union. It must be sunk. It must be kept a secret. The nuclear cargo that it is carrying will belong to The Committee for future use at their discretion. It will become part of a grander plan-an insurance policy for a rainy day.

Alexander reloaded his pistol and continued on throughout the ship finding crew member after crew member and ensuring that there would be no survivors. One by one each crew member was sought out and eliminated by the skillfully trained and relentless KGB agent. There could be no one left to disclose what happened here or where the Grisha had sunk. It must remain a secret. Not even Premier Cruschev would know about it.

Steps had already been taken in advance to ensure that records were falsified and people were silenced. The Grisha would somehow mysteriously disappear once back at Leningrad and quickly be dismantled in a Soviet scrap yard. Never to been seen again. The plan was ingenious. Witnesses would swear that they saw the ship at port. Workers would testify
