About this ebook

Karia can barely stand to be around herself, never mind others. She has been confined to the Aerie, until after the birth of her child, but there are limits to what she can do to pass the time.

Mitchell understands, although there is little he can do about it. He doesn’t have the time to deal with her moods and needs.

Erin, remembers what it was like for her, when she had carried Karia, but the requirements of her position with the new inhabitants of Tantalus, due to Karia’s pregnancy, is taking up every moment she has to spare.

Only one, Alena, seems to know what to do to soothe her granddaughter as she enters the final stages of her pregnancy. She enters the room, sits by Karia’s chair and begins to speak: “Let me tell you of a very young Tantalarian girl, a handsome young Tantalarian Guardian and the love they shared.”

I don’t really know what to say about myself.I have been writing books since before I became a teenager. Most are still hidden in the closet. I used to make up my own stories as a child, everyone used to act them out while we were playing outside. As a teenager someone issued me a challenge. I told her that her stories stunk, she told me to do better. My job growing up was to play guardian to my little brother, keep him safe. That meant I ended up getting into more fights than enough – makes sense now that I write about warriors. My family will try to tell you that I’m not innocent, I have a personality that keeps them on their toes. Over my lifetime and theirs I have earn several nicknames – The Godmother, The Evil Christmas Elf (comes from making my nieces wrap their own Christmas presents), Mistress of Ambush. My favorite response to them when they try to get me into trouble is just to look at them with a wide doe eyed expression and say “Moi?????”I have a seal point Siamese cat named Snoop, named after my favorite cartoon character and hobby. I have a “healthy” but small collection of Snoopy memorabilia. He is a character alright; never met a cat who can talk back like he does. He expects daily dosages of adoration on his schedule when he wants it – not when it’s convenient for me and he HATES snow.I come from a very large family (mostly brothers) and I could outrun the whole works of them (I’m the shortest!). It was called survival. This book has been in the making for a long time now. Over a half a year to write it, about the same amount of time to edit it, and probably about the same amount of time to get the art work and website! I have learned you can’t control the timelines of other people – Murphy likes to step in.So for now I am setting up good luck charms everywhere... didn’t know I had that many stuffed Snoopy’s. *Fingers, legs, toes, eyes and anything else I can crossed*

    CHAPTER I

The minute Alena walked through the entryway to Mitchel and Karia’s aerie, she knew her granddaughter was beginning to go into labor, she could feel the buildup in the air. It was time her great granddaughter came into the world.

The birth of a child was often a very emotional time for a woman and one her mate was better off being absent for, unless he was looking to get into trouble. There could be nothing testier to a Tantalarian male than a Tantalarian female who was about to give birth.

    Where is Mitchel? Alena asked.

Don’t even mention that man’s name, Karia’s remark followed, and she sounded crabby, even to herself. She then looked at Alena and burst into tears, as she held out her arms to wind them around her Grandmother. What am I going to do about myself? I am horrible. I nearly threw Mitchel out of the aerie earlier, and all he asked was if I would like my feet massaged. What is wrong with me?

You are having a baby, and not long from now, unless I miss my guess, Alena chuckled, as she wrapped Karia into her wings to comfort her.

Karia continued to sob, as she hoped Alena was right. She had been waddling about for months already, and if she got much bigger, she doubted if she would be able to fit through the entrance to her own home anymore. It had gotten so she couldn’t go anywhere, because her wings wouldn’t support her bulk. This was not a good thing.

Alena understood what Karia was going through, and she had a suspicion Mitchel had a good idea what her moods were about as well. That was probably why he called for her, and not Erin. Her daughter was too busy seeing to the things that Karia would normally do, if she hadn’t been so advanced in her pregnancy. It was also a good thing that Alena had some idea what might take Karia’s mind off her troubles, while she waited for the birth.

Let’s see how your baby is coming along, Alena suggested. She folded her wings back and did a general scan on Karia’s state of health. That would give her a good indication of the amount of difficulty Karia would experience delivering her child.

Karia knew the routine by heart, by this time. She had been going through the same thing anywhere from two to four times a day lately. Alena would check her pulse, her eyes and throat, hands, feet, and anything else she could think of. When Alena was finished, she would place the side of her ear against her abdomen and listen to the child. It was actually the one part of the examination she didn’t mind.

Alena always waited until the end of the exam to check on the child Karia carried. She knew her baby was healthy, and ready to be born, but needed a few more days to prepare before meeting the rest of the world.

Alusia, Alena spoke to her great grandchild, You are coming into the world at a very interesting time. Tantalus is changing, and it won’t be the same place any of us knew, by the time you get to be your mother’s age. You are going to dwell in an increasingly interesting world.

You think Alusia can really understand what you are talking about? Karia asked, with a watery smile. She was so happy to know that her baby was about to come into the world. She wanted nothing more than to be able to hold the child Mitchel and her had created from their love for each other. At the same time, she would miss feeling that precious life, as it moved inside of her, and knowing their hearts were beating in unison.

She knows, Alena spoke with certainty. She also knows of the love you feel for her. She would like to be held by you, as much as you want to hold her, but she wants to spend a little more time where she is, for she is certain that the two of you will never be as close as you are again. She says she intends to bask in that feeling a while longer.

I want to hold my baby so badly. I want to hug her close and kiss her. I want to show Mitchel our child, Karia began to weep again.

It won’t be much longer, and she is looking forward to meeting her father also. Alusia can feel the love you share with Mitchel, and has no doubt that she will feature strongly in the growth of your connection, Alena assured Karia.

Karia had been running the gauntlet of her emotions over the last several moths. Mitchel hadn’t gone with the other Tantalarian members of the counsel, and the Humans who had insisted on travelling with them. She knew that having the responsibility of the entire population of the planet, dropped on his shoulders without notice, had taken its toll on him. She feared the settlers coming to Tantalus from Mars would add to the pressure he was already under. She was frustrated because her condition kept her from his side, and there was very little she could do to help.

Alena knew more than she was telling. She understood what Karia was going through, although she hadn’t gone through quite the same thing. The love she had shared with Trysuil had been all consuming, for the both of them. It seemed to be a fate the women of their family were born to experience. She wondered how much of their history Karia knew, and if she had heard anything about her and Trysuil? She had it registered on the ship’s log, as a part of their lineage, but no one here had seen it. She hadn’t abandoned her child, as everyone thought. She had given Erin over to Trysuil to raise, because she had not been given a choice. She had been forbidden to have anything to do with her child by the Tribunal counsel. When her people had come to Tantalus, they had created laws because of the Phoenix bond. Those laws had caused her people a lot of confusion, and because they had never been abolished, some of the misconceptions still existed. They knew better now, but the laws still needed correcting. A few of the laws had been discarded over the years, because common sense had prevailed, but not all. Mitchel and Karia had studied them, during Karia’s aerie bound state and intended to change things, as soon as the members of the counsel returned.

Most of the population that lived on Tantalus didn’t tend to think of Karia when they thought about who would help change the laws on the planet. They would have been surprised to find out how much input she had on what was about to happen behind the scenes. Karia had a good education, which Trysuil had seen to during his lifetime. Erin had continued to pass his views along, and both of their influences could be seen in many of Karia’s decisions. When Alena considered everything, she figured that her mate’s influence would leave a very
