- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This is a very detailed novel that focuses on Briar and is told from her perspective. We learn about her and her relationship with her husband and other loved ones through flashbacks. The language is poetic, and Briar is definitely a strong female character. However, I didn't really enjoy the story. It moved a lot slower than I had expected and it was hard to tell what this novel was: was it a love story? was it more of action? It felt more like a mashup of 2 novels than one independent story. I also found that the poetic language and the flashbacks impeded my reading experience and detracted from the plot. The other characters were interesting but not so much that I felt drawn or connected to them. While I appreciate the author's attempt to showcase a strong female as the lead, the rest of the story didn't work for me. For those reasons, I'm giving it a 2/5 stars.
I received this novel as an advanced copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Thank you to BookSparks from whom I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway.I liked this book when I started it, and as I read it more I started to love it. Closer to the end I completely fell in love with it and the last few pages before the epilogue just stole my heart. The epilogue though, I am back and forth on my feelings for it. In fact, the first words out of my mouth after finishing this book were, “Why wasn’t it longer?” So this story, set in the Western Frontier of the U.S., follows a woman named Briar whose husband, Porter Logan, is kidnapped by miners because he knows how to work with dynamite. Briar immediately decides she needs to go after them and save her husband. Along the way she gets the help of a young man and a female horse trainer. The events that take place are not what I expected at all and I love that. This book started with an exciting first chapter, then it slowed down, and it slowly picked up pace as you kept reading. I truly fell in love with this book and the characters and the ending was really beautiful. The epilogue then goes on to tell you a bunch of information about the characters and their lives after the events of this book, which I did enjoy. After closing the book though, I realized that I wanted it to either be longer or to have the epilogue cut from the book and made into a sequel. As much as I enjoyed learning more about them, I feel there was definitely enough material there to make a second book. I honestly think this book would be great with the ending it had, and then using the epilogue in a sequel instead of tacking it on the end of this book.Overall I really loved this book and I highly recommend it, my only real let down was that the epilogue was so short yet so packed with information that the author could have put out a second (and maybe even a third) book for me to love. 4/5 stars
