A Lost Lady - Heather Sunnydale
Chapter 1
‘Mrs Collins, please make way, I am presuming the bedroom next to my own is free?!’ Lord Donaldson raised his voice loudly as he entered into the grand hallway carrying the body of a semi-unconscious woman in his arms.
‘Why yes Lord Donaldson, that room is always left free on your insistence...we do not allow it to be occupied even by your family members or friends who come to stay from time to time. But why My Lord are you asking such a question? And who is she? Poor thing...did you find her like this, what has happened to her?’ Mrs Collin’s Lord Donaldson’s housekeeper spoke in worry and confusion as she noted the bundle in his arms and rushed to his side.
‘That I cannot tell you, Mrs Collins, I found her on the ground lying all alone out on the moors. She was delirious at first; mumbling some words I could not understand, and she would not tell me her name or answer my other questions either. So I thought only to bring her back here...she is not speaking now, I worry for her....please Mrs Collins send for Doctor Barnes, I will take her upstairs, to the bedroom next to my own as discussed.’
‘Yes My Lord, I will get one of the footmen to send for the doctor at once, though it is a late hour.’
‘Then make it clear to Doctor Barnes that it was I who has sent for him on a very urgent situation, and that he will be compensated accordingly for any inconvenience that will be caused to him tonight and hereafter. Do you understand?’
‘Yes Mr Lord, I understand perfectly I will make sure he comes at once.’
‘Good.’ Lord Donaldson then nodded her away as he started up onto the long winding staircase, conscious of the woman in his arms now clinging to his shirt desperately as she now started to mumble lightly under her breath.
He thought he heard the word ‘Rogers,’ and running away, but he could not be sure.
He was relieved when he finally entered into the intended bedroom and placed the unnamed woman down on top of the bed carefully.
Instinctively Lord Donaldson then reached to remove the tangled mass of thick chestnut coloured hair away from the woman’s oval shaped face. He could not help but pause for a moment as he took in her delicate features from her small button nose, high cheeks bones and full lips that squeezed together in distress.
Even in her sick state, Lord Donaldson knew that he was looking at a woman of great beauty, and a part of him yearned to see the colour of her eyes to complete the picture before him.
However, he was soon to put his self-interest aside as he heard the woman give out a loud, prolonged cough. It was enough to make him begin to pray for her well being that and seconds later when instead that he noted that she remained silent and unmoving. Had it not been for the visible breathing that he observed from her chest rising up and down slowly he would have been more anxious that he may just have lost her.
Leaving the woman’s bedside reluctantly Lord Donaldson went to start up a fire in the room, not wanting his sick guest also to have to deal with battling pneumonia on top of everything else she endured.
‘Please, what is it? My Lady are you alright?’ Lord Donaldson rushed back toward the bed from the fireplace with concern.
He stood looking at the woman a little stunned who now sat up on the bed staring back at him with the most amazing piercing blue eyes as if she was looking right into
