Chapter 1: In the land of the elves
Once upon a time there were some diminutive elves living in a far away land of the north.
They had red hair covering almost all of their back nearly reaching their feet, a round nose, big eyes and square-shaped ears. Their clothing was colorful, sewn by the male and female tailors of their community and also made of the thick, soft fur of the white bears which were occasionally found dead among the icebergs by the hunters during their long journeys.
You see, a single bear’s fur was enough to provide clothing for all of them…. given their tiny size…
They lived in holes and galleries they had constructed in the ice… This made their land extremely difficult to be located even in the remote possibility of some stranger approaching their territory. So well were they hidden under the vast icy cold surface…
The entrance to the city was a secret one… to find it, one had to stand upon a specific spot on the ice only at night, stare at the huge white Ursa Major in the sky for five whole minutes and then ask for the key. It could be just one word or a picture that suddenly overwhelmed one’s thought allowing one to see the door
that led to the frozen city. A door
almost as big as the size of the visitor…As soon as this ice door had closed behind the caller, one would turn small enough to wander through the galleries of this city…
Upon entering, a wonderful full-white world was unfolded before your eyes…the streets all white…on each side there were small tiny holes in the ice leading to houses while some bigger ones pointed the way to frozen tunnels leading to newly built neighborhoods. The city was circular having in its centre all kinds of stores as well as schools.
In those stores, one could find foods of which seal meat and ocean fish being the most common ones, but also milk and even, although rare, seal eggs which were famously nutritious for the children. Also other products such as leather, hunting weapons, fishing nets, woven bear skin fabrics for their tiny houses.
Those elf houses had only one room and that was the bedroom. No other room was needed…
Every three or four houses, there was a hole in the ice which was aimed for their meetings. This venue was open day and night. After hunting or whenever they felt like it, the elves would gather there to cook, eat and many times they would talk after sharing their food or listen to the old people’s stories or even sing and dance until it was time to go to bed…
A little further away, at the end of every street ( truth being told that each of them looked more like galleries or tunnels rather than streets), there were large lavatories for everyone to use. There, all their excrement and waste was collected into large bins where it was burnt and the heat generated by this was conveyed through huge pipes to the entire city. What prevailed throughout this land was a soft, white light. It was the sun’s reflection penetrating the thin layer of ice reaching the bustling metropolis of the little elves.
The little elves lived blissfully in harmony, being as creative as they could possibly be every single day.
None of them ever died. They would only die if they ceased being creative. For this reason, enormous workshops were set up everywhere, with long tables made of ice on some of which the little elves painted and on some others they curved the ice making beautiful sculptures used later to decorate their galleries and houses. They would also weave the white bear’s fur which once woven was handed to children so they could paint it.
Yet, there was a very special workshop in some distance of all the others. It was also built of ice like all the others but unlike all the rest this was located at the edge of the city. The city’s most competent and smartest elves worked there day and night. What did they do?
They recorded the old people’s stories, restored the old manuscripts which were about to discompose, illustrated the most interesting stories and every once in a while they even composed music to accompany them.
The atmosphere in this workshop was religious. Every story had its own thick book also carved of ice.
