- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5this book maybe of limited interest but to anybody who is keen to know what happened to POW based in UK camps this is engrossing. We here so much as to how the British were treated by our enemies in their camps and so little about how we dealt with the Germans and Italians in this country. This gem of a book only relates to the Orkney camps so may not be a true overall reflection of how we run these camps.Approx 1200 Italian soldiers captured during the North African campaign arrived in Orkney in 1942 and put to work building the barriers between the islands to protect the Allied warships. It was incredibly hard work in difficult conditions bearing in mind the Italians had no experience of life in these remote islands. From this adversity an iconic Italian chapel was built on Lamb Holm and the events relating to its creation is recorded in detail. The book is also well illustrated. It covers the skills of the men who built and decorated the chapel and the legacy post war where the Orcadions and Italians built up respect and friendships. Its part of the history of WW11 that should be highlighted as one of the positives of this awful time in history.
