Chapter 1
Thunder shook the sky , each roar followed by a brilliant flash of lightning.
Phillip Walters hunched over the steering wheel, his body shivering from the icy air that blew through the car. His air conditioner was broken again. No matter what setting he used, the temperature was always the same, arctic. He didn’t know what was worse: the blazing hot, sticky air outside the car, or the frigid air within.
There are worse things, he thought with a grimace. The AC might not work at all.
The storm rolled and rumbled through the streets of Chicago, sending papers flying and turning the city a strange shade of tangerine. Black windshield wipers squeaked as they tossed rain away from the glass. The Rolling Stones’, Sympathy for the Devil, played softly on the streaming radio. Every so often, the ear splitting thunder intercut with the beat of the bongos and the groove of the electric guitar.
Phillip rhythmically tapped his fingers on the steering wheel. He was just coming up on his favorite part when a digitized voice interrupted the song. It was the fifth interruption in the past sixty minutes. Blowing out a breath, Phillip straightened his spine, ran his hand through his midnight black hair, and checked to see if any of the other cars were watching his impromptu drum solo. No one
