Eva peeked from cover.

The research laboratory, burning madly in the background, provided enough light to see the quad, the gravel, the vehicle.

Three more bullets out of the darkness spanged noisily off the corner of the metal building as Eva ducked back to cover, counting in

her

head

.

She smiled and leaned back around the corner, taking a bead on the man standing there. He hadn’t been counting his bullets, and his pistol was empty right now. Even across the darkness of the gravel driveway, she could see the little hump on the back of his Luger pistol where the slide had locked itself.

She fired once, right at the center of the

dark

spot

.

It was night. He was wearing a matte black SS uniform with little silver badges and bangles and things. There was a vehicle between them, providing the man some level of waist-high cover.

Eva would have felt bad about missing him and shooting the car. A brand new 1939 Mercedes 170 V deserved better than that, even if the Nazis that owned it had painted it that hideously-boring gray they did everything else. It was still a beautiful automobile.

The bullet took the man dead in the heart.

It wouldn’t have mattered.
