    Chapter One

Jonathan stared at the letter in his hands hardly believing that a girl of Rachel's caliber would have answered his mail order bride ad. The rough, calloused hands brushed over the smooth scalloped-edge parchment on which she wrote as he drew the paper up to his nose inhaling the scent of fresh jasmine and rose water. He smiled at the irony of the fact that he worked on the Rose Creek Ranch. He feared he wouldn’t be a proper suitor for someone of Rachel Reeves standing.

He read and reread the letter making sure it wasn't a joke from one of the other ranch hands. Jonathan hardly had time to court a decent lady and his Pastor, Robert Elmwood, told him about placing an ad for a mail order bride which saved him time from having to go out and find the right wife himself. The six-foot-two-inch man put the ad in the back the travel magazine which targeted readers up and down the East Coast. His hope centered around finding a young lady who wanted to move west to settle down with a rancher. He never dreamed he would capture the attention of a Duke's daughter from England. When Jonathan took the letter to Pastor Robert, he couldn't believe what his Pastor said.

Young man, this is divine providence. You expressed how you wanted a lady of proper upbringing, one who loves the Lord, and one who can appreciate the finer things in life as well as one who doesn't mind a little bit of hard work. Pastor Robert smiled with his brow raised as he set the letter on his desk.

But sir, Rachel is an aristocrat.  Her family probably lives in one of those giant houses or castles somewhere in England. How can I compare? I am nothing like the young gentleman callers she probably has for her there, Jonathan said.

I say she wrote to you first. She picked you out of all the ads in the travel periodical. There's no reason why you shouldn't write back if you're interested. You're obviously interested because you came all this way to show me this one letter. It shouldn't matter that she comes from England or that her father is a Duke. America is a free country and people migrate here all the time so they will have the freedom to live however they want. If this Rachel wants to come over here and meet you and wants to pursue a courtship with you, then why should you stop it if you're interested as well? Pastor Robert asked in his very matter-of-a-fact tone being very practical and down to earth. Jonathan prided himself being that way too but he felt very intimidated by this Rachel yet very intrigued. After heading back home, Jonathan took out her letter one more time reading through, his eyes dancing over her beautiful penmanship and wondered about answering her letter over all the other letters that had arrived. He had to admit his heart seemed drawn to the young Miss Rachel than to any of the others. Jonathan loved his ability with penmanship and grammar giving him the opportunity to write back to
