About this ebook

After being the victims of a hate crime at their high school in rural North Carolina, cousins Joe and Luke Pell move to Baltimore to live with their drunk but loving aunt, Stacy. Almost losing them to death, Stacy fears for her nephew's lives, believing society isn't as easy on gays as perceived. Due to their highly feminine mannerisms, Stacy suggests that her nephews transition into Joanne and Lolita in secret. With their delicate faces and petite bodies, the teenagers are as beautiful as dolls. But when Joe gets a boyfriend who is unaware that he is male, their house of lies comes crashing down in the vilest way.

    What’s Up Fam,

I hope your summer wasn’t too fast and you had the chance to enjoy it with your loved ones. This summer was a tough one for me, but I am tremendously blessed and refuse to complain, so moving on.

A School of Dolls is finally up at bat. I truly enjoyed it and found myself laughing out loud and shaking my head at some of the predicaments Paige had her characters in. I’m sure you will like it too.

With that being said, keeping in line with tradition, we want to give respect to a vet or trailblazer paving the way. In this novel, we would like to recognize:

    Lauren Francis-Sharma

Lauren Francis-Sharma is the author of the novel, ‘Til The Well Runs Dry. It is a very captivating tale of love of family and scandal set in Trinidad in the 1940s and 1960s. The Caribbean serves as the perfect canvas to paint the author’s story during this time. Make sure you check it out, but be warned; you will probably be in the mood for some Jamaican or Caribbean food while you’re reading it, so enjoy!

Aight, get to it. I’ll catch you in the next novel.

    PROLOGUE

    NORTH CAROLINA

The cafeteria, slightly dark and cool, smelled of twenty-three teenage football players after a hot sweaty game. Each of them had their sights on two victims who wondered where the anger originated.

The schoolmates they trusted—whom they washed dirty uniforms for and cleaned up after in the locker room, surrounded the scared classmates like predators.

Joe and Luke, cousins, watched the mob close in on them after having been stripped of their clothing. It was certain that they feared for their lives. Trembling, they stood arm and arm, wondering what would happen next.

Marcus Johnson, the quarterback stepped from the pack and looked at Joe Pell first. The athlete’s face was contorted with anger and the cousins could feel the rage steaming from his pores. Without warning he raised his hand and smacked Joe with thunder, causing him to buckle and fall to his knees.

"Why did you make me chase you? he asked cracking his knuckles. And then why come here? Don’t you two faggies realize we gotta eat in this bitch? he paused. Must you contaminate everything you touch?"

As Joe wept quietly from the floor, large streams of tears rolled down his cousin Luke’s blushed butter colored cheeks as he awaited his fate. Knowing it was coming he braced himself as best as he could by tensing his body and closing his eyes tightly.

Although savagery was in the air at the moment the day started simple enough. The South Carolina Banshees went on to play the North Carolina Bobcats in a rival football match that they clearly were unprepared for. Not even fifteen minutes into the game Marcus, quarterback of the Bobcats, was sacked three times resulting in a shameful landslide loss.

After the defeat, filled with anger the Bobcats piled into the locker room, only to see Joe and Luke dancing to Drunk In Love by Beyoncé. Hips swaying back and forth, they moved like women, which at the moment irritated Marcus to no end. It wasn’t as if the team was unaware that their peers were gay, it’s just that the recent loss had them feeling resentful, due to stealing their chances at a championship run. As far as Marcus was concerned who better to take it out on then two gay boys who were defenseless standing next to Marcus’ 6’4 inch height and muscular arms?

    Storming toward them Marcus snapped.

He walked up to the radio, tossed it across the way and slammed a fist into the locker causing both of them to tremble. The music no longer played in the background. I’m sick of you niggas coming in here with this gay shit! The team, also looking to get off a little steam, circled the duo. Somebody got to remind you dudes that you ain’t bitches. His gaze swiveled between them. Take off your fucking clothes!

A large hush grew over the locker room, the teammates wondering where their captain was going.

Joe smiled uneasily, his light honey colored skin-producing puddles of sweat along his hairline. Stop playing, Joe said jokingly. We were just fucking around, if you want us gone we can bounce.

"Yeah, Marcus, Luke replied with a larger grin, trying to appear more confident than his cousin that all would be okay. Why you so serious when you know we be just playing?"

Marcus stepped closer, his teeth bearing. It was apparent that he wasn’t in the mood.

    I…said…take…your…fucking…clothes…off!

Although the team had no understanding of why Marcus would request two admitted gay classmates to undress, they knew better than to challenge him.

Realizing he had to do what he was told, first Joe removed his sweaty white t-shirt, followed by his jean shorts.

"The underwear too," Marcus coached, pointing at them.

Reluctantly Joe complied, cupping his hands in front of his penis when he stood amongst them naked. Luke now receiving the brunt of Marcus’ evil attention because he was still clothed, quickly hopped out of his blue jeans and red t-shirt.

Marcus smiled and looked back at his teammates deviously, who were happy he hadn’t gone totally mad, because at least he acknowledged them. Look at these scrawny ass niggas! If I hit either one of them they’d break!

"Can we leave now? Joe asked. We won’t bother you—"

Marcus pressed his massive hand on the right side of Joe’s head and slammed it against the locker so hard he temporarily loss hearing in his left ear. Blood splashed everywhere and when he regained his balance he and Luke went running out of the locker room, in the nude, for their lives. Not being done with them, Marcus and his teammates took off in a violent pursuit.

Unfortunately for the cousins they arrived at a dead end, the chained up school cafeteria. Basically help could not come in from the outside.

With nowhere else to go they had a feeling the worse had yet to come.

Standing next to the table Marcus said, Now say you’re sorry for faking like girls when you niggas. He looked into Luke’s eyes. Tell me you nothing but the pathetic freaks that I know you to be. And beg me not to kill you.

"I’m nothing but the—" Luke’s sentence was severed when Marcus socked him in the mouth so hard his jaw relocated to one side of his face. Marcus’ fellow teammates showed zero sympathy as they cheered their quarterback on, wondering what act of brutality he would perform next.

"Get up!" he demanded both of them who were on the cool ground.

Having been struck first, Joe covered his penis while Luke looked up from the floor in fear, refusing to rise to his feet.

"Fine, if you don’t want to get up, we’ll bring the heat down to you. He looked back at his men. Finish these fuck boys off."

Instantly fists, kicks and shoves bombarded the cousins from all angles. There was no place to run and no place to hide. The only thing they could do was succumb to the pain.

    And so they did.

    CHAPTER ONE

    A YEAR LATER

    JOE

    Ididn’t want to be here…

All of the loud screams and cheers after the verdict was read made me feel like I was in a circus instead of a courtroom. But here I was, witnessing the school board being found guilty of neglect. And although we won our case, the only thing I wanted to do was get out of this building, put my mother in bed and lay next to her while she rubbed my hair.

I still can’t believe all of this happened. Although we weren’t really friends, before they jumped us, Marcus was cool. On the days they won, when the rest of the football team went home, he would kick it with me and Luke at the Dance Deli in the city. And whenever people would tease him about being gay for hanging with us he would get with them quick, and they always left us alone. But this day he was somebody different. Someone who seemed to hate us because of who we were.

When my mother first filed charges I didn’t think we would win. It was hard being gay down south in the Bible belt, so Luke and me kept our lifestyle a secret. If it hadn’t been for Luke’s
