Introduction
I was born a Jew. My mother was the only child of Rabbi Kesler, who immigrated to South Africa from Poland.
My Grandpa, Rabbi Kesler taught me the assigned Torah portion for my barmitzvah, which I had to publicly read in synagogue.
In our home, we always had the radio on throughout the day. Our home was filled with music and a deep reverence for God.
On Sundays, the radio station had a morning church service broadcast.
At first, it was just a voice talking in the background, but then after a while, the sermons that the preachers delivered caught my dad’s attention and he told me ‘they talk a lot of sense!’ Dad especially enjoyed their choice of words in their uplifting message. The more we listened to what the preachers had to say, our understanding and belief in Jesus began to grow.
Things were quite different in the Jewish Orthodox synagogue.
Because the service was all in Hebrew, (which most of the community did not understand), we were always left feeling empty without a message of hope....without getting any scriptural teaching.
I didn’t like that you could not sit where you wanted to in synagogue, especially on the high holy days like Rosh Hashana (the Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). The seats are allocated according to what you can afford to pay. It’s like when you buy your ticket to go to a concert. The rich sit in the front rows, while those who cannot afford the higher cost of the front row seats, have to sit in the back rows. (and
