About this ebook

Doctor Peter Alexander is starting a new job as a psychiatric medical doctor at the Middleton Home for the Criminally Insane, and almost immediately his training and reality come into sharp conflict. As a doctor from the north he was used to orderly running institutions and minimal corruption
.
Jonesville, Florida like the rest of the United States in the fifties and sixties did not have compassion for people with mental illness or labeled as such. The doctor soon finds himself at odds with the cruel, predatory head nurse who runs the asylum and controls the self-destructive asylum director.

As the tension grows between Doctor Alexander and the head nurse, he quickly realizes his inexperience is a poor match for her sexual frustrations and the cruelty she dishes out on the patients. Doctor Alexander tries to help the patients but the head nurse has him in her cross hairs, he must make a choice surrender his virginity or he could lose his life or career.

    Bad Memories - Douglas Sandler

    Bad Memories: Asylum

    By: Douglas Sandler

    Introduction

The events in this novelette set in a fictional town in Florida are based on the historical records of physical and mental abuse that occurred at Pennhurst Asylum in Pennsylvania, Letchworth Village in Rockland County, New York and Willowbrook State School in Staten Island, New York. The names of individuals are not intended to resemble any people living or dead. The abuses happened, but the mental hospital in the story is fictional.

Some of the mental illnesses described are based on psychological ideas of Sigmund Freud, which when the DSM III came out in 1980 were called antiquated and based on unproven and untested theories. Please see the end of the book for information for one of the actual events that I use in the book that is based on facts.

    Dedication

I dedicate this book to the memory of all the people hurt or killed because of mental health abuse in those places behind this story and behind my first book Bad Memories. These abuses are why I became a mental health advocate. I also dedicate it to my goddesses Hecate, Diana, and goddess ISIS. I also dedicate it to the teachers and instructors at Gulf Coast Community College now Gulf Coast State College and Florida State University for helping me to develop my writing skills.

    Chapter One

Doctor Peter Alexander was a small man who was capable, but small-minded and saw what he wanted to see. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in July 1937, forty-fifth in a class of seventy. He worked as a doctor at several psychiatric hospitals or, as he called them mental warehouse institutions. His supervisors gave him passing marks as a doctor, but noted his lack of courage and observation but, he felt they didn’t have to be so damn obvious about it. In August
