The King’s Four Quests
Once upon a time, there lived a king in a vast and beautiful land. All the people loved their king, and once a year he held a wondrous fair in the meadows around his palace.
People came from near and far to enjoy this summer festival. They came for the great tournaments, the tasty food, the games of fun, and especially for visiting with friends from the farthest reaches of the kingdom.
This was also at time for the sons and daughters of the land to look for their future mates. The young ladies tried to capture the attention of their favorite young man with pleasing smiles, clever phrases, and fancy colorful dresses, while the young men attempted great tests of strength, and made bold promises of adventures they’d undertake to win a maiden’s favor.
One year, a beautiful princess from the eastern part of the kingdom and a strong handsome prince from the west fell in love. He won many colored ribbons in the tournaments and presented them to her, making her blush from the attention. In the evenings, they went for walks in the meadows, and their hearts were stirred with thoughts of a future together. Before long, the prince and princess had pledged their love to each other and decided to get married.
Before the wedding could take place, however, they had to win the king’s blessing. The king, who was very wise, always presented young couples with certain quests to prove their love, and it was known that the quests were especially difficult for young princes and princesses.
So, the last morning of the fair, the prince and princess left their families at the gate of the palace, and holding hands, walked in to make their request of the
