About this ebook
At the dinner table, it became clear why the Duke had returned suddenly to his estates. It was the Dowager who first pointed out the large space above the fireplace, and the Duke shivered and looked away from the blank space on the wall.
“Miss Loveridge should be there.” The Dowager explained to Charlotte. “Where is she, Miles? Don’t tell me you are reframing her again.”
“Her picture is gone. She is gone.” He said, and for a moment the two women looked at him in confusion. It seemed to take him a long time to speak, but finally he said, “Miss Loveridge and I are no longer engaged. Our wedding plans are abandoned, and she has gone to the Highlands to stay with family.”

Chapter 1
Charlotte swept into the room, throwing her bonnet down upon the table. Her sister, who had been happily sewing by the fire, looked up.
Is it final, then?
She said, and Charlotte gave a brief nod before walking over to the fireplace to warm her hands.
I cannot believe it of him.
Augusta said, and Charlotte realised that her sister was determined to talk of it.
I did not believe it myself, at first.
She said, cautiously. I thought there had been some mistake. But no, he has gone to Paris.
Augusta tutted, and put down her needle. I am sorry, Charlotte. It is a great knock to your reputation.
Of course.
Charlotte said, and blushed a bright red. I know that they must all be talking about it. I daren't show my face in Almack’s this week, I would be the talk of the town.
Charlotte.
The voice of her father interrupted his daughters, and they turned to see him standing in the doorway, bright red from walking across the hall, and leaning heavily on his stick. My girl, you must come with me at once.
Charlotte walked forward obediently, and her father stumped miserably across the hall. If he was walking then it was not a bad day for his leg, but it was unusual for him to come himself when a servant could be sent as easily.
The Marquis followed his daughter into the room, using his stick to push the door closed behind them.
I had to come get you myself, no point sending one of the men for this little journey.
I know.
She said, softly, and he looked up at her from beneath deep brows.
You know, eh? Five thousand pounds I had invested in this match, worth every penny your mother said, and now he is off to Paris. Is it debt?
I suppose so.
Charlotte said. I hadn’t asked for a reason.
I don’t see why not, Charlotte. You are as entitled to ask as any other fiancée. Is he gone away yet?
He is quite gone.
She said. I have been there today; his mother is quite beside herself with grief. He left last Tuesday. Apparently she had been holding on to his letter until yesterday.
The woman is mad.
Her father said, stoutly, and leant back in his chair. So, what do you plan to do now?
His daughter shrugged. "I can’t do
