Sheri-Lynn Marean, Author of Dracones Awakening, book one in the Dracones series, did not grow up thinking she would one day be an author. Instead, she grew up riding and working with racehorses, drawing and selling her animal artwork, and of course reading. Sheri fell in love with reading at age twelve and has not stopped reading. One day Sheri decided she would write her own book, with her own characters, doing what she wanted them to do. PRIMALTHORN’S DECREE

Tartaria, A Thousand Years Ago …

It is time. I pass the mantle of ultimate guardianship to you, my dragonson. You will protect the innocent and lead all of dragonkind.

The primalthorn’s decree was binding as his last breath rattled in his chest and then fell silent.

Though spoken a millennium ago, his sire’s words boomed like thunder in his mind as Skullathorn slumbered restlessly.

I fear the burden I place upon you will be daunting and often discouraging. Day by day, dragonkind numbers dwindle further, and I’ve been mortally wounded. You will protect the innocent, and hunt those who wish to do them harm. Even when it is one of our own you are tasked with stopping.

The primalthorn’s voice grew shallow. You will travel to the few remaining clans within this galaxy and pick strong, worthy sentinels to help in your endeavor to keep dragonkind alive. You will partake of their blood, binding them to you for instant communication and power when needed.

The directive, spoken a lifetime ago, haunted Skullathorn’s dreams, making him twitch. An endless cascade, they never failed to fill him with urgency to fulfill his obligation. The soul-wrenching pain of loss, as searing and deep as ever, roused him from his restless slumber.

Though awake, Skulla continued to drift on the memory of his sire’s final words. He considered his life since that fateful day. For too many years to count, Skulla had done his duty and more. He’d patrolled the realms in their galaxy, protecting the innocent and hunting the rogues who sought to harm them. Sometimes he hunted with his sentinels, but often without, since they could cover more ground that way.

It had been a daunting task, beyond what even his sire had predicted. Skulla’s fierce reputation as primalthorn grew, and he eventually became ruthless and intolerant of those who preyed on the weak. Before long, he was one of the most feared of all dragonkind.

But he also became the ultimate guardian, doing his best to save his brethren. Yet their numbers continued to decrease. Fewer dragons were finding their soulmates.

Though the females of their kind held on to their humanity, without a soulmate, male dragons did not. Without their other half, and after long, solitary lives that never ended, their souls dried up. Then they fell into depression. All too soon, the lack of a soul drove out all humanity. Insanity and then finally, a sickening desire to maim and kill.

After Skulla became primale, those closest to the edge had come to him, begging for a swift end. At first, he was horrified by their requests and refused. There had to be another way.

But despite his best efforts, that proved futile.

When the result of his refusal ended in the death of the innocent, he was then charged with hunting the rogue males and ending them. It was a brutal lesson and one he’d never forget.

Heart and soul sick, Skulla acquiesced to his brethren’s requests, and eventually, he learned to turn his emotions off and bury them deep.

But as the lonely years passed with no end in sight, he often worried. The first faint stirrings of depression were already trying to worm their way inside of him. Skulla drew upon his unyielding sense of duty to hold them at bay. Still, he cringed in fear of when that failed to work. As an ultimate being of power, who would stop him when the time came?
