Hubner describes how he and his family have worked to protect and restore about 15 acres of prairie that had a history of light dairy-cattle grazing. Ecologists recognize Dower’s Prairie as one of the finest examples of a deep-soil mesic prairie found east of the Mississippi River. Over 30 years ago, Hubner began protecting and restoring a back corner of the Dower family’s dairy farm. The results are simply beautiful. Few have a chance to see this prairie. Steve Hubner

With help from his family, Steve Hubner has managed Dower’s Prairie since 1989. He was born and raised in Lafayette County, Wisconsin, and earned degrees in wildlife biology and biology from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. For 35 years he was the zoning administrator for Lafayette County. He received juju training in Cameroon, as a Peace Corp volunteer, specializing in fish production. Today, he volunteers a lot of time with The Prairie Enthusiasts, cutting down trees, clearing brush, and anything else that needs doing to enhance native prairies and savannas. His first book is Dower's Prairie through the Seasons, a photographic tour of his favorite place.
