The Wormhole
Although the trip through the wormhole only lasted for a minute, it was the longest and scariest minute of her life, hands down. They had made it into the captivity of space and for a long period of time the shuttle just drafted. It would do so until another portal opened for the wormhole junction to connect and soon the Noah will be jettison to a new planet, a new earth. Surrounded by a sea of stars, the eerie darkness seemed like a background to the burning balls of gasses. Rena was grateful for the unnatural quiet that was the beauty that space provided but hated it at the same time because it provided the playground for questions and at the moment she didn’t have the answers to all, if any of them.
Going into hyper mode.
The vox came on overhead.
VOXs are standard automated computers for all rooms, buildings and in this case, ships and other major methods of transport and customizable to whatever voice pattern the user may want. Her Vox had a male baritone with a British accent that reminded her of her grandfather that died in the nuclear attacks in the summer of 2050. She was only a child then and there wasn’t much of time that remain with her and in some ways Rena was grateful but she remembered his voice and his sacrifice for her and her mother when he volunteered to stay behind to buy them more time to get to the bunkers in the north.
Engaging in hyper mode in three, two.
The count was done but there was nothing but a soft humming sound that started in the next instant but they were not moving.
Maybe it’s warming up .
Logan Summers, her copilot was saying standing up to move to the cargo hold.
What are you doing?
Rena asked alarmed
"I need to check on the stabilizer and in case it works, I need you to be alert and ready to fly us into that atmosphere when it comes up on the long-range scanners.
In case of what?"
In case it works.
He repeated more to himself than to Rena
Just be ready.
He told her and she could hear his gravity boots clanging on the metal floor; when he didn’t answer right away, Rena’s eyebrows went up
Works? In case what works?
Rena's eyes narrowed, then widened as if she already knew the answer to what he was thinking of doing.
"Oh, wait—so what are you saying? Before she could press him to tell her why he was acting like a madman, the ship jolted forward. Logan was pushed roughly and she could hear the metal cry when his body slammed into something hard. Manning the helm, she could not move from her position as they became sucked into the center of a black hole during the hyper mode.
Rena called out to Logan but she already knew that she couldn’t get anything out of the guy, not after that throb and she wondered if he were dead and if she was really alone. If Logan hadn’t taken her hand and pulled her to the Noah, she would have watched frozen like a deer caught in headlights everything
