About this ebook

The depths of some seas are not filled with water, but rather the broken dreams of lost souls.

Would the one voted “Most Beautiful and Desirable” by her classmates, still be both after five years had passed? Would the one voted “Most Athletic” cling to former glory days? What about “Most Happy” or “Most Invisible?”

Invitations received for a five-year high school class reunion are the catalyst for a gathering of former classmates. Not all have lived up to the potential of the titles bestowed to them upon graduation. Yet the day of reckoning and revelations has arrived. The flames of past passion will be reignited. An angry rage of past jealousy will be unleashed. Some will reveal how time has changed them, and some will break free from fears that have held them back.

Will the bestowed titles hold true when the decorations fall and the mirror ball is darkened? Or will some find that the task to either live up to their titles or break free is in fact...most impossible?

    This story is for me

    Chapter One

Cooper silently watched every house that passed by from his view in the school bus, colors and styles, run-down or well-kept. He tried to remember the make and model of each car and truck that sped by. The trees had always been there, but today he looked at them differently. He smelled the scent of the spearmint gum being chewed by the kid sitting next to him. The overpowering stench of the perfume from the girl sitting in front of him was something he would definitely not forget. Cooper hoped he would remember the blue color of the sky and the white puffy clouds that were slowly passing over Perrysville. Would he really remember all of this? Some of it, maybe. He wasn’t sure.

The usual chaos among the other students on the bus was heightened today, the noise near deafening. Paper airplanes and spit wads commanded the attention of those engaged in this juvenile warfare. Laughter exploded as one boy donned a jock strap on his head in the spirit of stupid humor. Normally, the bus driver would be yelling threats of pulling the bus over until the students became quiet. Noticing the headphones the driver was wearing, Cooper guessed he had given up all attempts to maintain order, surrendering his part in this war.

Though the bus ride from the school was only two miles for Cooper, to him it seemed that he had traveled a lifetime to get here. The speed of the bus decreased as his bus stop drew near. Cooper felt his beating heart pound to the point at which he thought that it would explode from his chest. He had dreamed about this moment, the moment that every kid dreams about. As the bus came to a stop, Copper pulled himself up from his seat and then walked up the aisle to get off.

As he made his way through the other kids not one of them spoke to him. There were no see you laters, no "give me a calls." There were no smiles and high-fives. As usual … there was nothing. To each of them he simply did not seem to exist. A part of him wanted things to be this way. There was another part though that craved for something more. But now it was too late for that … or was it?

    See ya, Cooper.

Cooper stopped walking up the aisle as he was startled by these words. He turned his head and saw pretty blonde-haired Sunny Burton smile at him. Though they were both seniors, they hadn’t spoken to each other since the sixth grade. He quickly turned away when the bus driver impatiently reminded him to get off the bus.

After stepping off the bus, Cooper let out a sigh and turned to watch it speed away as if it was leaving the scene of a crime. In a way it was. Turning away from the dusty wake of the bus, Cooper looked at what lay before him. He realized that he had just traded one prison for another. School was over for good. As his high school graduation ceremony was tomorrow, he silently welcomed his permanent summer vacation.

Cooper sat down on a boulder that decorated the run-down landscaping. Within his hands were two testimonials. The first was his diploma, signifying his academic endurance for years of pure hell. This had been given to him early since he was not attending his graduation ceremony. He wasn’t given a choice about not attending, but he was okay with this. Family responsibilities trumped personal achievements. The second testimonial was an affirmation from his fellow classmates, something to remember him by.

Cooper stood up and turned toward the metallic ghost town set before him, a sea of rusty and decaying mobile homes from decades past. He began the short walk home, past one run down trailer after another. Hardly ever did he see any of the people who lived here. Maybe they were
