About this ebook

The smallest of three brothers, Keenan Mowat had a priceless talent: he loved the sea and the sea loved him right back. In this supernatural tale, Keenan Mowat takes on the sea. Beautifully illustrated throughout.
One in a series of tales that explore the deeper, darker side of our connection with the natural world. Be ready to feel a little bit of magic, and perhaps a few shivers down the spine.

The youngest of three fisherman brothers, Keenan Mowat loved the sea... and it loved him right back. One night, waiting to go out on the water, he was visited by a strange old man who warned him of a coming storm, and advised him to take three things - a hook, an axe and a silver sword - with him. Lacking only the third, he stole the much-treasured silver butter knife from Mother Cary's local pub, and to sea he went. Here he and his brothers, after an epic battle with the waves, has a surreal experience with the daughters of the sea, an experience that Keenan would never forget. For although he was never a fisherman again, after that night, his love of the sea (and one of its daughters) was only made the stronger...The second of British author Nicola Davies' marvelous Shadows and Light series, which presents original folktales intended to "explore the deeper, darker side of our connection with the natural world," Mother Cary's Butter Knife is a gripping tale. I thought that both the story and the accompanying artwork, done by German-born illustrator Anja Uhren, were beautiful. This is the fourth book I have read from the Wales-based publisher Graffeg - the others are Davies' first book in this series, The White Hare, and Jackie Morris' two picture-books, The Ice Bear and The Snow Leopard - and I have to say, they produce absolutely gorgeous books, from a visual, aesthetic perspective. They also (from my limited reading) publish engrossing stories! I will certainly be looking for more from them, as well as for the final two in the Shadows and Light series. Recommended to older children who enjoy folktales and folktale-type stories.
