About this ebook

Chambery, France: The Gem of the French Alps is a guidebook about the capital of Savoie (Savoy) in the French Alps. The city is not well known to tourists yet has a beautiful historic center, a long interesting history and was the seat of the Duches of Savoie for centuries. A little known fact is that the Shroud of Turn spent 70 years in Chambery. The Guidebook, which, based on my research is the only English language one in existence, tells you which attractions and places to visit, where to eat and sleep, what festivals to see, and the city's history. Moreover, it tells you what to visit in the environs of Chambery, including some amazing, little known festivals. There's much more to Chambery than the views and excellent ski resorts. There's also a section on Savoie wine and even a few Savoie easy-to-make recipes. This is the EGuidebook you need before visiting Chambery.

    Chambery, France:

The Gem of the French Alps

The place is Chambery, the capital of the Savoie (Savoy) Department in the Rhone-Alps region of France. Offering world class lifestyle amidst the Alpine valleys and mountains, Savoie offers miles of snowy skiing slopes dotted with old historic towns. Chambery, a less known city of the region and not often visited by tourists, is an undiscovered gem. The Chambery we see today has medieval origins. The city’s name was derived from an ancient lord of the town, known as Cambarius. The town was located in a marshy area and once had street gutters running throughout to drain the waters away from the town. Later, Chambery was the seat of the Savoyard capital, and housed the Savoyard Dukes from 1295 to 1563.

Established at the confluence of the ancient roads and flanked by Switzerland, Italy, Burgundy and Dauphine, Chambery was at first under the rule of the Francois, only to be seized by the Dukes later. The three Amadeus, the VI, VII and VIII (975 - 1050) from the house of Savoy were the chief architects of Chambery during their reign as Dukes. It was during this
