FREE YOURSELF FROM PILES & STACKS OF PAPER
Tools Needed:
Colored tab folders
Streaming music or favorite podcast
Trash bin
Estimated Time: 30 minutes for 2 – 3 stacks
Cost: $12
The Problem
Like most of us, you started off with good intentions. You’ve bought organizing trays, a filing cabinet, or maybe you temporarily hide things in your closets or drawers. Temporary, however, often turns into permanent when it comes to letters, magazines, notes to ourselves, bills, and junk mail—leaving us with out-of-control clutter and a sense of helplessness.
The Solution
1. Choose one or two stacks that you would like to get rid of today.
2. Give yourself 30 minutes to get rid of the stack(s).
3. Download your favorite podcast or listen to some enjoyable but non-distracting music.
4. Set aside four multi-colored folders and label them (e.g., Urgent, Needs Attention Soon, At your Leisure, and File).
5. Start going through your first stack. If an item is more than a year old and you haven’t touched it in a year or more—toss it. The only thing that you absolutely have to hang onto are your tax returns (generally 3 - 7 years).
6. Start separating your diminishing pile. Put items that need to be filed into your File folder. Put items that need your attention immediately into your Urgent folder and so on.
7. Magazines older than a month get tossed. If there is an article or picture that you really want to keep, scan it and turn it into a PDF (more on that below). Old Bills, brochures, and the like should also get tossed or recycled.
