    The mysterious feline with two tails appeared about seven months ago on the waning edge of winter. Since then, she’d roamed the tree-lined neighborhood, always alone and afraid, availing herself of the food and water set out by various people but never trusting any of the humans.

    The stealth cat proved to be so elusive, Alex wondered if anyone else had gotten a good look at her at all. If so, surely the Two-Tailed Cat would have been the talk of the neighborhood—likely to her detriment.

    Alex had kept waiting for the notoriety to surface but, to her great relief, it never did.

    Good morning, Little One. How are you today? Standing at the top of the three stairs leading down from the covered porch, Alex leaned a bit over the cast iron railing. She spoke softly to the living shadow lurking below among the roses surrounding the house.

    The tortie cat didn’t answer. She never did.

    Pre-dawn grey concealed the cat from all but the sharpest eyes, but Alex could tell exactly where she hunkered down just clear of the rose bushes’ thorns.

    Early morning dew made the sweet fragrance of the plants that much stronger. A multitude of rainbow blooms remained, but before long, autumn frosts would trigger the plants’ dormancy.

    The cat’s fear, extreme but not feral, told Alex she’d been dumped. But—at least with regard to Alex—the cat no longer fled at top speed. The terror had given way to extreme skittishness, to milder anxiety, to distrust, to haughty avoidance just on principle.

    Alex had occasionally glimpsed her in daylight. She had plentiful orange streaks through her short coat, especially on her face, so in good light no one would mistake her for a black cat. But in the pre-dawn gray, the predominant black
