Chapter One
Under the Kentucky sky, Hope Walker stood at the creek’s edge watching the rippling waves of the clear water that beckoned her forward. She welcomed the invitation and bent down to remove her black leather shoes and stockings. Placing them at the edge of the creek, she took a few steps into the stream before pulling the hemline of her plain cotton dress up. Feeling the wetness of the hemline, she raised her skirt exposing her bare feet and legs.
Hope smiled as she thought of her mother’s constant worry about her protection. If her mother were alive, she would have indeed been chastised for exposing what she called God’s precious gift. Her mother’s view was that women should never expose themselves. She took a quick glance at her surroundings. There was no one around that she needed to heed her mother’s warning. The thought of being chastised by her mother changed her cheery mood to a feeling of sadness. A teardrop formed in the corner of her eye. Her mother had been shunned after leaving her Amish family in Pennsylvania to marry her father, who she met quite accidentally when he came to the farm to look at a horse that was for sale. Her mother missed her family and suffered emotionally because of the exclusion. If it hadn’t been for her father’s support, her mother might have lost it long before she passed away.
Brr!
Hope shrieked as the cold air blanketed her. She came to the creek to relax and needed to change her mood. She took a couple of steps further into the stream allowing the water to come up over her thin ankles. She giggled like a school girl who had just been kissed by a boy for the first time. She closed her cobalt eyes and held her face up to the sun allowing the rays to warm her dewy skin. Taking in deep breaths, she took in the thick smell of pine and wood. The outdoors relaxed her.
After a few minutes in the creek, Hope opened her eyes and lowered her head to look down at her skirt. She had unknowingly released her skirt while she was
