    Chapter One

Under the Kentucky sky, Hope Walker stood at the creek’s edge watching the rippling waves of the clear water that beckoned her forward. She welcomed the invitation and bent down to remove her black leather shoes and stockings. Placing them at the edge of the creek, she took a few steps into the stream before pulling the hemline of her plain cotton dress up. Feeling the wetness of the hemline, she raised her skirt exposing her bare feet and legs.

Hope smiled as she thought of her mother’s constant worry about her protection. If her mother were alive, she would have indeed been chastised for exposing what she called God’s precious gift. She took a couple of steps further into the stream allowing the water to come up over her thin ankles. She giggled like a school girl who had just been kissed by a boy for the first time. She closed her cobalt eyes and held her face up to the sun allowing the rays to warm her dewy skin. Taking in deep breaths, she took in the thick smell of pine and wood. The outdoors relaxed her.

After a few minutes in the creek, Hope opened her eyes and lowered her head to look down at her skirt. She had unknowingly released her skirt while she was
