ABOUT THE AUTHOR
As of 2016 James Smith is now in his seventies. Born in a village in Gloucestershire, he is the youngest of three children. He has been married for forty years, and has children and grandchildren.
From as far back as he can remember he was given great freedom to wander the fields, hills, woods and waterways of the beautiful area in which he grew up. His education started at the local Church of England school before he was five years old. It was here, attending a compulsory harvest festival ceremony in the local church with his school class that it occurred to him that something about religion did not make any sense. In the following years, as he vividly recalled where he was sitting, and even the bearing, manner and voice of the vicar, various questions arose in his mind, but he could never find any satisfactory answers; least of all from those who claimed to know.
At eleven he moved on to a technical school and had a thoroughly enjoyable time despite never truly excelling at anything at all. He even got caned a number of times, which seemed to stem from simply enjoying himself; being too boisterous, perhaps. Meanwhile, this religion thing was always quietly there in the background. He was able to learn biblical texts and stories without any particular effort and was always able to meet reasonable standards. Looking back, it had been the same in the junior school too: good at biblical stuff, having a very enjoyable time and three good smackings for no good reason that he could then understand.
He always had the idea that the religion he learnt was nonsensical but should not be. Those spouting it always sported a mixture of ceremony and gravity in the way they behaved; they liked to look and talk the part. It seemed to be nothing more than play-acting. He recalls clear memories of one teacher at primary school going into great detail on the seriousness of blasphemy; speaking of God in muted and deferential tones. She even carried a Bible with her as she marched about, ramrod straight and very strictly allowed nothing to be put on top of the ones allocated when stored inside desks! There were a lot like her; so many very seriously subscribed to such a reverent viewpoint that it was clearly best to keep one’s thoughts to oneself.
At twelve years old he became a member of the library in the local town and quickly scoured all they had to offer on what he sought. Unfortunately, it was not much help. At the same time, he discovered an interest in psychology and read everything that was available, quickly finding that a lot of the big names in this field were about as vague and useless as their religious counterparts. They had produced thick volumes containing reams of verbiage and little useful substance. Yet again, he realised there were depths here to be uncovered, and it soon became a lifelong interest.
The nearest he ever came to realising his religious quest was a book on Hatha yoga that he purchased via a postal catalogue. It showed a hundred or more bodily contortions, most of which he was quickly able to do, but really could not see what use they were, even though this kind of thing is very popular now, sixty years later. Perhaps less than one page was very opaquely given to the deeper purposes and he had no idea what it was getting at. Even today, the masses that practice these postures rarely have any notion that Hatha yoga is really a gateway to deep, esoteric practices.
Now, looking back on those years, he enjoys musing on some of the things his mother would say. She had a great turn of phrase and, in hindsight, she was clearly picking up vibrations hidden from him. Perhaps some of it was born of exasperation and a little sarcasm. She would say, Jimmy, your problem is that you are just too good for this world.
Or, The trouble with you is that you have your head in the clouds and will come down to earth with a bump one day.
And in the maddening way in which mothers are always right, this is exactly what happened. Having never discovered any particular aims or ambitions he spent his adult life on building sites, and can truly say that he thoroughly enjoyed himself; working physically hard for money, but enjoying endless, boisterous humour. Never depressed; it was a good crack
. His wife once commented that she thought he went to work just for the laugh and not to earn money! It’s more than possible that her observation had a ring of truth. It would seem nothing has much changed to this day!
Years passed, and more and more questions arose in his mind.
