Acerbus, thank you for all the insightful comments you never fail to make. And Al, thanks for your comments and the reassurance that what I wrote wasn’t crap! Finally, thank you, Debbie, for telling me about this anthology in the first place.
Also thank you, high school, for not not sucking and giving me some really inspiring material for this story.

New Day, Old Blues
A whole new day, a whole new school year, whole new experiences…not.
After two months of falling asleep at two a.m. and waking up at noon, Sathya was struggling to keep his eyes open enough to make the journey from his dorm room to the quadrangle for morning assembly. The first day of Class 12 was the same as the first day of any other grade: assembly was extra long, the principal addressing the students with a rambling speech about motivation and doing better and blah, blah, blah. Except today, when she delivered her spiel about working hard and aiming high for the public exams, she was looking at Sathya’s class. That was new.
Around him, his classmates stood taller, tightening their neckties and lifting their chins, galvanised by the inspirational words about those high achievers who had been products of the school. Sathya had a feeling the high spirits would last a month
