I don’t know when it was that I first met Ed Bryant—he was behaving normally, I’m sure, didn’t have any spoons over his eyes or Tom Terrific-style funnels on his head—but I remember that I was struck by his air of... composure. We were at a party at some convention, and I was blundering through the crowd to get a beer, and when I paused to catch my breath I found myself face to face with him.
I recognized him, of course, by his shoulder length hair and always-quietly-amused face, and when I mumbled something about how much I had admired his work, he took it gracefully; have you ever noticed how most people tend to squirm in that situation? And Bryant shares his elan—in a few moments I had forgotten about the beer and was chatting with him as easily as if I had not been in envious awe of his stories for years. He even remembered a couple of novels I’d written for the old Laser Books series, and, when I told him that I
