    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

Kelsi admired the incredible artwork as her heart pounded in her chest.  Her mother would be so proud.  Under Juan Hernando Perez's direction, the museum had masterfully designed the display.

They are magnificent, Ms. Dane.  There are no words ...

It is breathtaking, Kelsi whispered as she circled the giant room that housed her mother's artifacts.

They stood in silence, mesmerized by what stood before them.  Finally, Kelsi had the breath to speak.

You have done a magnificent job, Mr. Perez.  I am so grateful.

No, Ms. Dane.  The gratification is ours.  The people of Ecuador.  For returning this to us.  Were it not for your mother, they would have been forever lost.

I am delighted to be the messenger.  Kelsi was trying hard to regain her composure.  So as you are aware, Mr. Lamont is tending to the security.  How about you run me through the details of tonight's reception.

Calm as she was on the outside, Kelsi had to pace her breath to calm her insides.  Suddenly she felt so vulnerable.  By now for sure they knew she was in town.  It was like waiting for the other shoe to drop.  In the meantime, she had to concentrate on everything that concerned this night's events.

The soothing calm of Trey's voice lifted her from her semi terrorized state.  So everything looks perfect, he said, as he wrapped his arm around her waist.

Mr. Perez, the security here is state of the art.  Clearly you have spared no expense.

No, we have not, Mr. Lamont.  Fortunately our very generous benefactors have seen to that.

Excellent.  And I have arranged for special security for Ms. Dane.  For this evening.  You understand.

Perez did not hesitate.  Of course I do.  One never knows.

Absolutely, Mr. Perez.  So please do not take offense.

    Never, Mr. Lamont.

Trey took Kelsi by the hand and squeezed.  So, tell me Mr. Perez, should there be anyone or anything that should concern us.

Perez thought for a few moments as if he was trying to choose his words carefully.  Our criminal elements are not expected this evening.

And what criminal elements would those be?

Those, Mr. Lamont, would be the criminal elements that plague Manta.  Perez turned to insure that no one was in the vicinity.  The drugs.  The smugglers.  They are very savvy.  They control Manta.  At least the port.

Well, Mr. Perez, we shall keep them from the doors this evening.

Perez wiped a bead of sweat from his brow.  Thank you, Mr. Lamont.

Before we leave, Mr. Perez, I should advise you that I will be meeting with a very important business contact this evening.

Really?  Perez seemed stunned by the revelation.

There is no cause for concern, Mr. Perez.  Actually, I believe he is one of your benefactors.  Adelmo Murillo.

Kelsi couldn’t help but notice the obvious relief on Perez' face.  Oh.  Mr. Murillo is indeed one of our benefactors.  And he is a prominent businessman.  I am impressed Mr. Lamont.

I'm pleased to see he is a man of such importance.  I will be meeting with him downstairs - in the dark room.  I have already checked it.  It seems very private.

That it is, Mr. Lamont.  You are more than welcome to use it.  No one will interrupt you there.

Kelsi couldn’t help but notice that Perez seemed flustered.  We are not offending you are we?

Absolutely not, Ms. Dane.  I am honored to have such distinguished visitors in the museum this evening.

She guessed she believed him.  Well then, Mr. Perez, you'll be stuck only with me then.

Perez blushed.  That will my pleasure entirely, Ms. Dane.

Trey took her by the hand and headed towards the main entrance.  So we plan on a nice lunch and a few hours to acquaint ourselves with Manta.

Excellent idea.  We are very proud of our culture.

As well you should be, Mr. Perez.  Kelsi took him by the hand.  We shall be back at 7 PM sharp.

Kelsi was relieved to see the limousine waiting in the front entrance.  Just as the driver approached to escort her into the vehicle Trey whispered in her ear.  All systems go.  The place is clear.

    ~

Before he joined Kelsi in the limousine, Trey whispered to the security detail that they would proceed as planned.

Driver, he said as he approached the open door, we want to enjoy the finest of your Ecuadorian cuisine.  Picantería El Marino has been highly recommended.

Excellent choice, Mr. Lamont.  I can take you directly there.

Trey nodded in approval and entered the vehicle.  He turned to Kelsi.  I spoke with the security supervisor in the dark room, Ian Talford.  He lowered his voice.  Following a successful sweep.  Of course I'll have to check it again this evening.

    Kelsi nodded.

Trey took her hand in his.  He recommends this place.  Seems it serves the finest cuisine on the waterfront.  And, it will be easy for them to secure the area.

Well then, I'd say were off for lunch.

Trey kept a careful watch as they drove through the streets of Manta.  While the security had performed well, Trey knew he could never let his guard down.  The streets seemed unusually crowded for mid-day.

Is it normally this crowded in the middle of the day?

Yes.  Mr. Lamont.  Our port is very busy.  If you look ahead you will see the main entrance to Manta, Ojo al pescado.

    Fish eye?

Si, Mr. Lamont.  It is the symbol of Manta.

No sooner had the driver spoken than Trey saw what he was talking about.  Of course, he thought, the tuna.  The statue was enormous.

Trey squeezed Kelsi's hand and nodded his head in the direction of the enormous statue.

Kelsi looked ahead and whispered, Grupo Del Atun.

It is Capital del Atun, the driver said with obvious pride as they slowed to get a better look.

They sat in silence.  It was imposing, Trey thought.  Almost too imposing.

Honking broke the silence.  Trey turned and noted that the security vehicle was still directly behind them.

    The drivers are impatient.

Always, Mr. Lamont.  This is the center of our trade.

The car headed west.  To the north is our Port.  The tuna fleet is busy.  And the cruise ships.  Next is the Malecon y Zona Turistica.  The boardwalk and tourist attractions.  We can visit later if you like.  First, you shall enjoy a delicious meal.

Trey watched intently as they circled away from the port and headed east on Avenida Jaime Chavez, then circled to Via al Aeropuerto.

A few minutes later, the driver announced, Here it is.  In the heart of Tarqui Beach.  And directly across the street, the fresh fish market.

    Trey turned to Kelsi, Ready?

Absolutely, she replied, as he took her hand and helped her out of the limousine.  Right behind were the two security SUV's.

The place was bustling with locals.  The food must be as good as advertised, he thought to himself.

A friendly server approached them.  Table for two.

To Trey's surprise, the man appeared to speak English.

Welcome to Picantería El Marino.  We specialize in fresh Ecuadorian seafood.  Our specialty is Ceviche.  The fish is very fresh.  We cure it in a fresh blend of citrus juices and season it with ají peppers and our secret blend.  Perfection.  We are also extremely proud of our Shrimp and Rice.  I will give you a few minutes to decide.

Trey ordered a bottle of sparking water, then turned to Kelsi.  To his surprise, she appeared quite at ease.

You're holding up well, my dear.

I am.  There's no sense in fearing the unknown.  It's a waste of energy.  We can weather the red sky.

    The red sky?

I haven't had a chance to tell you.  Especially not this morning ...

The mere thought of this morning set Trey to an immediate erection.  God, what she did to him.

So tell me now.  Something else happened this morning?

I got up before you.  I pulled opened the tapestries in the living room.  The sky was ablaze.

    Ablaze?

Not like you think.  It's an old sailor's adage.  Red sky in the morning ... sailor take warning.

Briefly he could sense the fear in her eyes.  And then it was as if she was at peace with it.

You think I'm crazy don't you?

No!  Not at all.  I think you're very wise.  If you weren't feeling a bit of apprehension about this, then I would doubt you.  But you are far too smart.  Far too savvy.  Far too experienced for me to ever doubt you ... or your senses.

Kelsi smiled and took his hand.  Thank you for that.  But at the risk of sounding paranoid, respect the red sky.  Just trust me on that.  Call it natural instinct.

Of course I respect the red sky.  And you.  I would trust you with my life, Kelsi.

He wiped away a tear from her eye and admired her.  He loved that she was an exceptionally brave woman.  But what he loved even more was her depth of character and her principles.  Kelsi Dane was a gem.  He was going to spend the rest of his life with her even if she wasn't ready to agree to that just yet.

After several minutes of solitude, it was Kelsi who broke the silence.  So what would you suggest, Mr. Gourmet?

Trey laughed and turned his attentions back to the menu.  Certainly we must try the Ceviche.  I suggest the house special.  It seems to have the best of everything.  The fresh fish, the shrimp, calamari.  Sounds delicious.

    Kelsi nodded in approval.

Then let's try the white corn Ceviche with the fried green plantains. ...  And for the main course, let's go for the shrimp and rice.  You agree?

Kelsi laughed.  You're the connoisseur. Everything sounds wonderful.

Trey signaled for the server.  As soon as he was out of range, Trey took Kelsi's hand.

So I suggest we stage a relaxing afternoon enjoying the sites in Manta.  I discussed it earlier with Ian, so he's prepared.  He does have photos of our more obvious ... friends.

Who no doubt know we are here.

No doubt.  So let's just keep them guessing.

Within a few minutes the food arrived.  Indeed, Trey thought, it looked delicious.  Too bad the circumstances were anything but.

    ~

Kelsi had to admit.  Their afternoon had been rather interesting.  Tarqui Beach was hardly parallel to the beaches she was accustomed to in South Florida.  This beach was a bustling place where tuna took center stage.  The fishermen were everywhere unloading their catch.  And much to the delight of the seagulls, many of the boats cleaned the fish directly on the beach.  Not for the faint-hearted, Kelsi laughed to herself.  Nearby, the Manta boatyard was unlike anything she'd ever seen.  Giant wooden fishing boats - dozens of them at a time - built by hand on the edge of the sand.  She had to admit, it was actually quite impressive.

In the midst of all of it, Trey had remained true to his love for food.  He had become somewhat of a favorite among the street vendors whose specialty was dry roasted corn snacks known as Choclo.

She turned and admired him as the limousine headed back to the Mansion.  He was as entertaining as he was handsome, she mused.

Kelsi nudged closer to Trey.  If only this was a pleasure trip, where her sole focus could be on her beloved mother's artifacts.  How ironic that those cherished artifacts had come to serve as the perfect cover.  Or less than perfect, she worried.  It was completely unrealistic to imagine that Legarda or Kassab, or the Envoy ... or anyone involved in this criminal enterprise would take this trip seriously.  No.  They knew she was up to something.  And the only way they could determine what she was up to was to follow her.

If they got wise to the meeting between Trey and Adelmo Murillo, all three of them could end up dead.  And yet Murillo was apparently a professional informant.  Either he or his CIA handlers had built him an impeccable cover.  But that didn't mean something could go wrong.  Terribly wrong.

Get a grip, Kelsi, she demanded of herself.  This was hardly her first dangerous assignment.

So Kelsi.  What is it?  Why are you so apprehensive?  Because someone has tried to kill you?

Perhaps.  These people were certainly bolder than others had been.  No one had actually carried out a plan to kill her.  Well, not that she knew of.  And even if they had, it was no secret that she refused to be intimidated.

So what is it Kelsi?  Is it Trey?  Could it be that for the first time in your life, you’re in love?

    No!

Trey turned to her, obviously startled.  Kelsi.  Are you OK, love?  No what?

Sorry, Trey.  Guess my thoughts were drifting.  I'm fine.

Are you Kelsi?  Just look at his eyes...

Really.  I'm fine.  I think what I need is a nap before the event this evening.

She knew Trey was about to object.  Fortunately, before he could plead his case for sex, the limousine arrived at the Mansion.  And, of course, the entire security team arrived with them.  As dangerous as the prospects of this trip were, she was more than ready to drop the full security detail.

Trey whisked her up to the room.  No sooner had he closed the door than he grabbed her and drove his tongue into her mouth ... exploring her.  At that moment, she abandoned herself to him and followed his passion.  Their kiss lingered for a blissful eternity until he carried her to the bed.  Without saying a word, Trey slowly stripped off her clothes, then his.

To her amazement, Trey wrapped his arms around her and held her tightly.  Fall asleep, Kelsi he said as he licked and nibbled at her ear.  Fall asleep.

She was too exhausted to argue.  As much as her body tingled for him, she had to sleep.  Right now, it was her only escape.

    ~

By 5'oclock they were in the shower fully enjoying one another.

You love that.  You know you do, Trey whispered as his fingers coaxed her to a second climax.  Still wild with desire, she threw her arms around his neck and pulled her to him.

    As she reached
