    Daniel Defoe was born in London in 1660 and was not, strictly speaking, a professional writer. He came from a family of Protestant merchants of Belgian origin and was destined for a career as a minister. But he did not follow this path. Defoe tried many different avenues; as well as being a merchant, he was also an adventurer, a politician and a journalist. He only dedicated himself to literature at the end of his career, due to financial needs.
