Matthew Gregory Lewis was an English author born to a wealthy family in 1775. He wrote The Monk: a Romance (1796) in ten weeks at just 19 years of age while he was readying himself for a career in diplomacy. He went on to pursue a political career and became MP for Hindon, Wiltshire. After several uneventful years in the House of Commons, he turned once more to literature and began writing poetry and plays, including The Castle Spectre (1798) and Alfonso, king of Castile (1801). When his father died in 1815, he left England to visit his family’s estate overseas in West India where he discovered slaves’ shocking living conditions. He denounces the practice in his Journal of a West India proprietor
