AN UNEXPECTED STOP
––––––––
School had already finished for quite some time and eventually for Federica it was time to leave for the sea.
She has always loved those moments before the departure for Albarossa: the preparation of suitcases, the choice of things to bring and things to leave at home. Certain she would find them after being away for three weeks.
But above all she was eager to get together again with her best friends. The first of the three, Matteo, was a dark haired boy with a lock of blond hair on the side fringe and two beautiful emerald green eyes. He was a year older and had always liked him. He lived in a big city, but unfortunately not the same as hers, because she would have loved to see him during the rest of the year, instead of talking to him over the computer or telephone.
Matteo played football in his neighbourhood's oratory team and every Tuesday sent Federica weekly reports of the match. Once he even sent her a picture of himself in the team uniform, which she had printed out and pasted in her diary.
Armando, the second friend, was her same age and came from a southern city. His eyes were brown and wore a pair of large glasses, and his hair was always scruffy as if he never combed himself. He was a very intelligent and cultured boy, but unlike the nerd in Federica's class who never spoke to anyone, also a true companion. He was always smiling and knew lots of jokes which got you in stitches with laughter, especially when he told them in his dialect.
He always came alone to Albarossa with a train journey that took many hours and stayed at his grandmothers, born and bred in that country. His parents, in fact, during the month of August were always busy with their work therefore it was up to her to host him, something she did quite willingly.
During the year Armando spent most of his days in front of his computer: sometimes to play, but more often to deepen his IT knowledge. Every day he was eager to finish his homework in order to spend time with his favorite hobby and you could tell the he is a real computer genius, because there wasn’t program or game that he didn't know how to use.
He would never let go of it not even during the holidays and his bedroom looked like a research center laboratory: cables everywhere, empty CD cases on the floor and the printer that worked continuously churning out sheets one after another.
Everyone was certain that he would become a research scientist!
Then there was Beatrice, little Bea, the youngest of the group and a true romantic. But this was not her only quality: friends considered her the best and the most generous girl in the world. She absolutely loved animals: she would never hurt not even an ant and they seemed to love her back. Of course, she was also a big coward and scared of anything, but if she had a goal which she really cared about, she became braver than a lion.
Beatrice lived in a small town near Federica's city and occasionally during the year their families met. Since she was also a champion swimmer, the last time they met was at the event of the provincial finals. Federica wildly cheered her friend, who came first, beating the runner up by almost half the swimming pool length. Everyone said she would become a professional swimmer, but she never showed off about it and proved it especially when she was with her friends. You'd never think you were swimming with a future super-champion!
Finally herself, Federica, Fede for her friends. A blond girl with long hair falling over her shoulders and eyes of a beautiful color that ranged between light brown and green. Physically she had developed at a very early stage and was, in fact, the tallest of her group of friends. At school the teachers occasionally complained about some of her performance drops, but her grades were almost always excellent.
Given her height, she played volleyball in the school team and was a real leader, to the extent that within half a season she had already become the team captain.
Federica remembered very well the path to the sea because in previous years she had learned by heart the names of the motorway exits, and repeated them in her mind just before she got there. She knew that with every sign, the distance that separated her from her friends was getting less and less.
This time, however, at a certain point the names were no longer the same to those she knew. Intrigued, she asked her parents the reason for this change.
They answered that they wanted to greet a colleague who has taken her daughter to the hospital, a two year old child.
Perhaps you remember her, she's called Margherita. They came last winter to dinner at our house
, said her father.
Of course I remember. Why is she sick?
She has caught a nasty disease, a rare disease that must be treated in special hospitals.
What do you mean special?
Specialized hospitals which treat childhood diseases,
said her mother.
Do you mean that they have special care for the children?
Exactly and where very smart doctors who work there have specialized in dealing with those diseases.
I didn't know there were such places. I thought children were cared for in conventional hospitals, similar to that in which I went to last year.
Usually it's like that, but when the disease is particularly serious, they are transferred to places like this, where they can be treated with more care.
They were silent until the arrival in the parking lot and once entered the hospital asked the reception lady directions to reach Margherita's room, then used the elevator to get to the second floor.
Upon entering the room they were greeted with hugs and kisses. Margherita was sleeping at that moment, so the tone of voice was very low.
Federica had noticed that the room didn’t look like a hospital room, but it looked more like her old bedroom: checkered and colourful paintings were proudly displayed on the walls, and some toys were scattered on the floor on a foam mat consisting of large pieces of colourful puzzle.
She didn’t have a bad memory of hospitals. Of course, she knew that being there meant being sick and having to get healed. In her case, however, once she was healed, after less than a week, she went back to her normal life. She even remembered a really nice nurse, and a doctor who looked too young to be a real doctor: in fact he had a boyish face and a bit of hair above the upper lip just like some of her classmates, and was completely different from her family doctor, the one she usually went to, and who looked more like her grandfather.
They all left the room so as not to wake the girl and began to talk to each other. The expression of Margherita’s parents was very sad and often the child's mother had to stop talking to dry up the tears.
After a few minutes, with the urge to go to the bathroom, Federica began walking down the hospital corridors. Passing through the various rooms, she had a great desire to look inside and seeing a few open doors took a few steps inside to watch.
The scenes were very similar to the one she had seen in Margherita's room: children in bed, of different ages, from the youngest to the oldest ones, while the adults, sitting alongside, were talking quietly to each other or reading a newspaper. As she came out of the bathroom she decided to continue her walk through the corridors ending in a corner where there were some small green plastic chairs, a yellow table and a red blackboard with magnetic letters stuck to it. At that moment the word G-I-A-N-N-A was written on the board, surely the name of one of the hospitalized children, while over the next cabinet there were also some board games.
After another few minutes, her mother was calling her, telling her that visiting time was over and that they still had to visit another person before leaving. Federica was actually a bit bored and couldn’t wait to get to the sea, but then she thought she would have three weeks to be with her friends anyway. After all a few minutes late wouldn't make that much of a change to her vacation.
The person they had to visit was the hospital director. She had called for Margherita's parents and so took
