The day was grey and wet, perfect for the mood Jack found himself in as he headed through the bustle of the airport. And then, just to cap it all, his phone had buzzed in his pocket with that in-coming text.

It was from Karen and it read:

You bastard. It's our anniversary. I get you to myself so rarely. I had plans. But now... you're not here. You're at the airport, about to get on a plane, about to jet off to a foreign country, a foreign city. You'll be miles away when you should be here with me, on our anniversary. You bastard. K x

He felt guilty. He felt frustrated. It wasn't his fault that he'd been called away to present the new marketing campaign at head office in Geneva. It wasn't his fault that Mike Rayner had broken his ankle in a stupid five-aside and Jack was the only person who could step in at such short notice.

She knew it. Karen was aware of all that. She'd said she understood.

It was just... he hadn't seen her in over a week. Sometimes it went like that: two people with busy lives, two people with complications, two people who had to take every opportunity they had.

He was frustrated. She was frustrated.

They'd had plans.

He queued at check-in. He only had hand luggage, which made it quicker. He would only be there for a couple of nights. When his turn came at airport security, he removed his belt and put it in the plastic tray with his wallet, watch and phone. Just as the tray went on the conveyor belt through the scanner it buzzed with another new message and he knew it would be from Karen. Was she still pissed off with him?

Once through security, he checked his phone again.

I'm missing you already, you bastard. We should be away in that little place in Rye, fucking like animals. That's what we should be doing. Instead... Well, you know the rest. Fly safely, my love. And one more thing: make sure you've downloaded all your mail before you switch your phone to flight mode, okay? I have a few more things to say. Don't open the first one until you're on the plane. He still had an hour to kill, so he went for a latte and sat looking out at the aeroplanes. He checked his mail on his phone, and sure enough, there was a stack of messages from Karen.
