    Chapter 1

    WHY CHARLOTTE?

A very good question. What’s so special about this place, you might ask? This is entirely understandable if you don’t know anything about the town. (My father lived there for 25 years, so I know a bit about it.)

The place has just exploded over the last few years, expanding massively in terms of population diversity and outside investment. It’s come a long way since it was characterized by George Washington as a trifling place when he visited as president.

Since the Queen City (it’s named for Queen Charlotte, George III’s wife) did not suffer destruction during the Civil War, unlike so many other Southern cities, Charlotte was able to get a head start on the rest of the South because of its central location and importance as a railroad hub.
