About this ebook

A 7 year old girl in Victoria wrote to the government pleading to save the lives of a mob of kangaroos in her town who were in the way of development. But she and her classmates were ignored. After befriending Joey, a baby kangaroo whose mother was killed by the school bus, she had a cunning plan to fly to New Zealand with Joey and talk to government representatives to ask why they cared about their national icon, the Kiwi. On the journey they ventured into the remote parts of South Island alone where they met a rare wild kiwi who told them the answers they were looking for, along with bestowing a surprise gift on Joey. Armed with this empowering information, would they now be able to persuade the government in Australia to save this mob in time?

Says Bob Irwin, Wildlife Conservationist and father of world-famous Steve Irwin "Chloe and Joey Meet a Very Wise Kiwi' is a wonderful children's book with a very important message to children and adults worldwide. Through her passion and understanding of the dire situation facing our unique wildlife, Menkit has produced a meaningful and spiritual version of our magnificent kangaroos, through the eyes of a child."

Menkit Prince, author, and Kathleen McLaren, illustrator, collaborated to create this work in order to educate kids about the plight of our kangaroos. Together they are donating 100% of the proceeds of this book to help wildlife carers who rehabilitate injured kangaroos.

    Dedication

Dedicated to countless millions of kangaroos and their joeys who have suffered centuries of unjust persecution and cruelty; to all the brave wildlife activists who campaign to liberate kangaroos; and to wildlife carers, the unsung heroes who selflessly sacrifice their time, energy, health and money to help injured kangaroos.

Also dedicated to six-year-old Adi Mandel from Massachusetts, U.S.A., who told his mother, Carmen, that when he grew up he would go to Australia and stop the cruelty to the kangaroos. Adi died in December, 2008 and his mother is sure he is in Heaven working with the angels to protect all kangaroos.

    Foreword

    Chloe Jordan, aged seven, wrote:

Dear Minister, I’m really angry and sad. It feels like I’m going to cry.

Reading this heartfelt plea to save a mob of 29 kangaroos trapped in Victoria’s ever- expanding development, I was deeply touched. Whitney Houston sang in her massive hit The Greatest Love of All ‘I believe that children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way…’

In Australia, only a handful of teachers and parents are as switched on as those in the delightful account of what transpired next.

Karin Geradts taught her Grade 2 class to love and respect kangaroos, and about the importance of protecting the habitat they need to survive. The dire predicament of a mob of trapped kangaroos near their school so affected the children that they wrote hopeful letters to the Environment Minister, but he did nothing to help the kangaroos!

Adrian Butler was so inspired by Karin’s awakening of children under her care that he conceived the idea of having someone write a book about Chloe and Joey going to New Zealand for help. In the story, Chloe and Joey would talk to Kiwi about saving the kangaroos from extinction, because Kiwi knew about extinction. Lovingly, the multi-talented Menkit Prince wrote this delightful children’s story.

Human encroachment continues to overtake the land that rightfully belongs to the kangaroos. They are fugitives in their own country, solely because no-one in government recognises or accepts any responsibility for them or their habitat. Bureaucrats only set commercial quotas or issue permits to kill kangaroos across Australia.

Kangaroos have evolved in harmony with their environment for millions of years but due to sociological/political factors they have endured over 200 years of persecution since European settlement in 1788. These negative attitudes, so deeply embedded in the Australian psyche, must be changed. It is with children that the fate of our iconic kangaroos rests. The alarm bells are ringing as time runs out for them, but this lovely story of hope will warm your hearts, as Chloe and Joey fly to New Zealand to meet Kiwi.

    Introduction

Dot and the Kangaroo, written in the early 20th century, is still a very popular book, because most people like the idea of being friends with wild animals, of living near the bush, of children being able to move freely and safely.

Unfortunately Australian Federal and State governments are exceptions to
