Liberation's Mystery - Wendy Lynn Clark
Chapter One
Life as she knew it ended on a Tuesday.
Tuesday was Galactic Garglers 2-for-1 night down at the SuperNova bar, and Brielle usually spent a couple hours after work there with her girlfriends before heading home to finish off the night with a glass of blue wine and a romantic holo alone.
But tonight, she was running late.
Accounting hadn’t sent in the paperwork for the last extraplanetary shipments until a quarter to five, and if she didn’t process them now, her boss would turn up at her cube on Wednesday morning and ask what she’d been so busy with that she couldn’t do her work, even though it was only the last fifteen minutes of her official day.
While the imports building emptied around her, she double-checked figures against her invoices, until pretty soon, she was the last island of light in an otherwise vast, shadowed office. Just as she was about to approve the figures, her input tablet broke.
Mine fires and nanobots.
She stood and stretched.
Outside, the Twilight District bobbed gently in eternal soft pink light. Her office was one of the many floating domes bridged by shimmering golden walkways and ivory statues. To the north was the dark stripe of the Night District, and to the south was the eternal bright stripe of Daylight. Some fancier domes moved between the districts on a timer, simulating a real day, but their office remained directly below the space elevator. A mile below, the bare planetoid’s surface was desolate and pocked by the ancient mines that had once controlled their fortunes.
She dropped to her heels and crossed the office. Kristof’s desk was near the elevator, and he never went home. She half expected to see the earnest goofball, almost at the end of his probation, studiously entering figures.
He wasn’t at his desk, and neither was his tablet.
It was a little too bad about Kristof. He had a nice body, trim with sculpted guns beneath his office suit, and the hint of a tattoo beneath the sleeve of his right bicep. She enjoyed admiring it when he didn’t notice.
When she had first seen him across the foyer on that special day almost six months ago, a zap of interest had jolted her heart out of rhythm. She had reached out to shake his hand. Hers disappeared into his wide grip, and his gorgeous silvery-green eyes gleamed intently from beneath a firm brow shadowed with hidden secrets. While her head was wondering who the mysterious hottie was, her lips were wishing for a little nibble of his rough jaw.
Then her boss had finished the introduction.
Kristof had bobbed his head, grinned like an idiot, and peeled his sexy blond hair back from a too-wide forehead like an unkempt rag. Gosh, golly, wow. I am beyond thrilled to meet another amazing coworker.
The illusion of mystery had shattered.
Was it too much to ask that she could meet a guy who brought a little excitement
