Dr. William H. Martin is head of the Department of Plant Pathology of the College of Agriculture at Rutgers and the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in addition to his responsibilities as dean and director, respectively, of those institutions. Results of his leadership in fighting plant diseases have been measured by Jerseymen in terms of improved quality and higher yields of fruits, vegetables, potatoes, ornamentals, and other important crops. A new copper fungicide for control of serious fruit diseases is but one of the numerous and beneficial results of the research program directed by Dean Martin during nearly a quarter century. Recognizing the need for translation of research findings into quick action on the land, Dean Martin established a spray service that promptly informed Jersey orchardists when and what to spray for the prevention of loss from disease. For florists, nurserymen, and amateur gardeners, he established, at Rutgers, the nation’s first chair of research in diseases of ornamental plants. His studies of scab of potatoes provided for growers a method for the control of this once-destructive disease. A native of Pennsylvania, where as a youth he worked on farms, Dean Martin is a graduate of the University of Maine. His work in New Jersey dates from 1915, and for more than 25 years he has served the Garden State as a research worker, teacher, and administrator. He was a consultant to the War Production Board on fertilizers, insecticides, and fungicides.

A past president of the American Association of Economic Entomologists, Dr. Thomas J. Headlee has for nearly 40 years fought the good fight against insects harmful to crops, livestock, and man. In New Jersey, where he is head of the Department of Entomology at Rutgers and the State Agricultural Experiment Station, Dr. Headlee organized and saw through to successful conclusion the campaign to exterminate the gipsy moth, contributed to the warfare against the Japanese beetle, organized and directs a comprehensive plan for combating mosquitoes, demonstrated a method for killing insects by radio, and supervised research work that has
