She Will Conquer All - Amanda Keller

    Prologue

    Chicago May 2057

Melinda Knight sat in her car in front of the huge gray concrete building taking her last look at the Biogenetic’s Labs from the outside.  The five acre square building just seemed like a huge one story warehouse that was more than a little creepy.  There were no signs or markings to show that the building was not abandoned.  A matter of fact, no one new that the Lab was even in the building except those that worked there.  Even when she was interviewing for her job it was done at restaurants. The location of the building was not given to her until she was hired, and had signed all confidentiality paper work.  She was not allowed to tell any one about the building, or what took place inside.  She was not even allowed to talk to other coworkers about what she was working on.  She had broken that contract for good reasons, but they didn’t know that, and hopefully they never would.

Biogenetic’s Labs is the biggest, richest corporation in the world, and the leading genetics lab as well.  It also has the most security out of any building including The White House.  There are no windows and all the doors are made to blend in with the building.  About twenty-five years ago things had started to change for woman around the world, and Biogenetic’s Labs was huge part of that.  It seemed that the woman’s movement was being reversed although at the time no one realized what it would lead to for everyone.  The government said they made these changes to improve family values, but why did they not put restrictions on men too?  It began with woman being told that they were not allowed to work for money anymore, or in any job except what was considered woman’s work like cooking, cleaning, and watching children.  They could either do this at home or at someone else’s house if they had no children of their own, but they could not be paid.  Some woman who were considered geniuses were given special licenses to work, but that was rare and those woman were treated horribly at their jobs.  The woman tried to protest it at first, but eventually they were subdued.

So woman became homemakers while men did everything else.

A couple years later the government decided that they didn’t want to keep dealing with disease’s anymore so they made everyone get genetic testing done.  Anyone who was found to carry a genetic predisposition for a disease, or any unhealthy problem, was immediately sterilized so they were not able to pass it on to any children.  Even couples who were not sterilized had to get permission to have children.  If your genetics did not show that you would have a fantastic baby (intelligent, strong, healthy, etc.) you were sterilized as a couple, and told to adopt.  This lead to people getting married because they could have children together instead of for love, since getting pregnant without being married was not permitted.  If you became pregnant without marriage you were imprisoned for life, and the child taken away.  Again this was not just in the U.S. but all over the world.  There were protest from both men and woman against this for a while, but eventually people started to see good reasons to get rid of genetic diseases.  This would make the human race better, wouldn’t it?

The next couple of years brought some of the biggest scientific break throughs in human history.  A geneticist by the name of Dr. Steven Rally found a way to create and grow a baby outside of the womb.  This was originally thought as being a way to provide couples who couldn’t get pregnant with a way to finally have their own child.  Everyone was very excited, and about a year later Dr. Rally figured out how to genetically engineer the babies.  He could choose what physical features they would have, eye color, hair color, skin color, and of course then the government got involved.  The government wanted to see if they could make babies who were more intelligent, stronger, and had more immunity to disease then what normal humans did.  Soon no one was allowed to have their own baby in the natural way.  If you wanted to have a baby you went to one of Biogenetic’s Labs where they extracted your genes and created the children that the government wanted.  They incubated at the lab, and then when they were born you were allowed to see them once before they were handed to the government to raise.  You never saw that baby again, or new what became of them.

The children that had already been born were left to be raised by their parents, but this was really the last children anyone ever saw.  Melinda was one of these children, but she was only raised by her mother.  Her father had died in a car accident when she was two, so she didn’t remember anything about him.  When she was three her mother took her to get intelligence testing done because she was learning so fast.  At this age Melinda could already read, write, and do math at the level of a third grader.  Her test scores were so high that they couldn’t even rate her on the scale.  They labeled her a super genius, and had her start school at the age of three.  She skipped many grades along the way as well as started college at an early age.  For a women to attend college was rare enough, but since she was only twelve it was virtually unheard of.  When she reached the age of twenty-two she already had a masters degree in chemistry, biology, and genetics.  Genetics was her favorite subject, so for a final school project she figured out a way to genetically enhance the immune system.  Though it would only work during the genetic process of creating the babies she hoped to find a way to help the people who were already alive.  Then she got a call from Biogenetic’s Labs about a job.

Melinda was told that she would become the children’s genetic doctor.  She would monitor all their genes to make sure that no defects occurred, and hopefully find more ways to enhance them.  They wanted her to find a way to make the children they created stronger, and smarter.  Since she had found a way to make them healthier they thought she could do this as well.  So far, the labs were only able to pick the babies physical attributes, but they wanted to be able to do a whole lot more.  Melinda wouldn’t know how much more until her first day so she was very excited to be starting in such an important job.  She loved children, but doubted that she would ever have her own since she wouldn’t be able to raise it herself.  She had loved being raised by her mother, and she couldn’t imagine having to always wonder what happened to her child.  Although the government may make her have a baby eventually so she could pass on her genes.  Though she was most excited about seeing the kids she felt honored to be helping to improve the human race.

Melinda remembers her first day here five years ago when a guard greeted her at her car to walk her to the door so she could find it.  She was so excited about getting a real job, something only a few woman in the U.S. could claim, and only a couple of hundred worldwide would have the right to say.  She walked into the building excited with a big smile on her face, but that didn’t last long.  There was a man inside waiting for her, but he didn’t introduce himself.  He scowled at her instead then turned around and barked, Follow me Miss Knight!

Upon entering the building she noticed the entrance wasn’t much different from the outside different from the outside.  There was rough looking beige carpet throughout, and one small desk with a receptionist.  The walls were gray concrete just like the outside with rows of fluorescent lighting, but nothing else was visible.  Then they went through another hidden door that led to the different labs that were available to work in.  The labs were light with sunlight from sky lights in the ceiling, and had every piece of equipment that anyone would ever need.  Melinda was in awe of the expense it must take to keep all those labs running.  Her college labs didn’t come close to what was available here.  They had all the latest technology, and spared no expense in the equipment.  She was shown her office where she was introduced to some of her coworkers, who were all men, that didn’t even glance at her let alone say hello.

She learned that the building had many floors that were underground as they descended in an elevator to the children’s levels.  The first set of quarters were lovely with each child having its own bedrooms.  The bedrooms were large with a bed, dresser, closet, and storage for books and toys.  They had many toys, books, and games neatly placed around the room.  The mattresses were soft, thick, and they had plush carpets on their floors.  There was even a huge room where there were at least 20 TV’s on the walls with gaming systems and cable hooked up.  There was also an indoor basketball court, volleyball, and tennis courts.  A heated pool along with a couple of playground sets were located in an outdoor space.  The kids were aloud outside to play in a large area that was fenced with a huge concrete wall.  They all looked happy laughing and playing.  They had schooling everyday for 8 hours and were educated by the best teachers in the world, all male of course.  As a matter of fact all the children in this section were male as well only white.  She thought separating the girls from boys was not to unusual, but why were their no Chinese, African, or Indians or any other nationality here.

When Melinda asked she was shocked by the answer.  All immigrants and people of different color have been shipped back to their original country.  He said.

What about the Native Americans?  She asked.  He answered back with a sneer on his face.  They were not Americans they were savages.  The savages from all around the world were sent to Alaska as a permanent residents.  Now lets continue on.  He turned away from her with a humph as he walked to the next door.  Her eyes had to be huge at this point she was so shocked, and it took her a minute to get her legs moving again.  The man cleared his throat as he stood at the door waiting for her.  She swiftly caught up with him.  As she approached him he said, No more questions, I have work to do, and we need to get through this quickly.

It took all Melinda had not to slap him.  She had not seen any other people than whites her whole life, but she had been home schooled most of her life.  Her mother had told her about the different nationalities she just didn’t know that they were no longer in the United States.  The next set of quarters were about half the size of the boys, and though they still had some toys, there were only a few dolls per room and two beds to a room.  They still had the plush carpeting and all the amenities the boys had just everything was smaller.  This was obviously the girls quarters by the colors on the walls.  There were books in these rooms too, but Melinda noticed these were mostly about knitting, sewing or some other domestic activity.  There was no entertainment room, pool, or sports here.  She also didn’t see any place for the girls to get their education.  The girls were all busy doing some hobby or another, everything from knitting to drawing.  When she asked why they were not being educated, or had as many toys as the others, she did not like the response.  Heaving a huge sigh at her question the man explained that these were the children from the upper class.  The boys were being trained to work in government while the girls didn’t need an education, because they would be housewives.  The only thing they needed to know how to do was to keep their spouse happy.  They were taught how to read and write, because they would need those to run a household, but that was all.

They continued to the next level down of the building, but when they entered she stood there frozen.  This level was set up as a military training base.  There was just one long room with cots lined up and down the walls with a small locker next to each bed.  The floors were just a generic gray tile that was clean, but had to be cold this far underground.  Their were showers and toilets at the back of the room with no privacy to them what so ever.  Everything here was in a grey and white theme even the kids clothes.  Compared to the upper class kids who’s rooms were done in every color you could think of, this was really depressing.  The boys sat around the room on a stool at the end of their beds taking apart guns and cleaning them before putting them back together.  None of them looked up when they entered the room or even acknowledge that they were there, but smell of blood, and the screams from the next room is what froze her to the spot.  The man continued through the room as if nothing was wrong while Melinda followed slowly behind.  She could feel the bile rising in her throat the closer she got to that room.

They went through another set of doors into a huge room that they named the workout room.  Melinda had to quickly turn around to get her emotions under control.  Here the kids were put through military training exercises, but they were being driven mercilessly.  On the other side of the room were the ones that were being punished for not doing the obstacles fast enough, or from not following directions.  These boys were strung up along the wall to be whipped.  They were naked and facing the wall with their backs shredded.  They were not allowed to show any emotion, and if they did they were tortured until they stopped making any kind of response.  If they passed out before that they were reawakened with ice water then tortured some more.

These were the kids that had been completely genetically engineered. They had no parents or class level, and were all boys.  These kids were on of the main reasons she was hired the man told her.  They wanted her to come up with a genetic way to wipeout there emotions completely, and to make them virtually invincible.  When she left that section she was almost choking on the bile that had been rising.  What had she gotten herself into?  The man was watching her closely for her reaction.  She would have loved to string him up, and whip him into unconsciousness, but instead she straightened her shoulders to walk casually by him as if it didn’t bother her.

She made sure no emotion showed on her face as she said, Shall we continue.

He smiled as he moved toward the elevator.  It took everything she had to hide her revulsion for what they were doing to those kids.

The next level down held the middle class kids quarters. These boys were tested for what job they would be good at around the age of three and then started training for that job.  They started working at the job around the age of twelve.  These rooms did not have separate sleeping quarters but they did have privacy curtains around each bed and closed in bathrooms.  There were no toys or anything to play with in the rooms.  They spent twelve hours a day learning how to do their jobs and received minimal schooling like reading, math, and writing.  She was surprised to see girls in this room until she noticed that they were in there cleaning up after the boys, and cooking and serving meals.  The girls quarters for the middle class kids in the next section was crammed with bunk beds.  They were allowed no education except for the domestic type and spent all day and most of the night working for the boys.  They cooked, cleaned, sewed, washed the laundry, and anything else the boys needed done.  None of them would look at you when spoken to, they just looked down at the floor the whole time, and only spoke when asked a direct question.  Otherwise there was absolutely silence in the room.

Melinda wasn’t sure if she wanted to keep going on this tour or turn and run the other way.  She couldn’t believe they were treating children this way.  The government was supposed to be for the people, but it seemed they were only there to help the rich people.  She had never really minded that woman stayed at home since she had loved having her mother with her all the time.  Her mother had told her about how wonderful it was to have a job that you loved, and to feel you were really doing something.  She always made sure that Melinda new it was fantastic to be a mother, but that some women wanted to do something more.  She did say that families were not as close then, but most people seemed to be happy.  Melinda thought that’s what she was going to have when she excepted this job.  Her mother sure would have been proud of her for everything she accomplished, but she wouldn’t be proud of her for working here if she knew what they were doing to the children.  Her mother had been so glad the government hadn’t taken Melinda away and encouraged her in everything she did until she died when Melinda was sixteen.  She had to do something to help these kids, or she’d never be able to live with herself if she did nothing.  She would keep the job, but secretly work to help these kids instead of helping Biogenetic’s Labs.

With her new resolve in place they moved down to the next level.  The first thing she noticed as the elevator approached this level was the smell.  It smelled of feces, urine, sweat, vomit and who knows what else.  She covered her mouth and nose with her shirt to try to filter some it out, but it was not helping.  When they entered this children’s quarters the smell was even worse. These children looked no older than four years old.  Their were no beds, blankets, or furniture in sight just a cold concrete floor.  They were all to skinny and dressed in rags.  They were so dirty you could not tell what color
